Carrick finds a mirror
Nick Stokes got a pile of aggro from Tony Watts a short while ago. Tony thinks that his buddies never, never threatened any of the scientists at the Australian National University. Much to his discredit Carrick, someone Eli thinks better of, proceeded to try and parse away the problem in a thread at Moyhu.
Well, somebunny decided to FOIA ask for the abusive Valentines that Tony and Judy's playmates sent to Phil Jones and Simon Hopkinton has them. They are so bad that Bishop Hill, after jumping on Watts' wagon about the ANU, is trying to walk away from them.
In the wake of the death threats that weren't at ANU, several people sent FOI requests to the University of East Anglia asking for copies of the death threats that they said Phil Jones had received. The relevant emails have now been released and can be seen here
Be warned, this is very, very ugly stuff, and there are several messages in there that seem to me to be criminal.
Colour me disgusted
I hope you fuckers die slowly and painfully you are the scum of the Earth and should be put in front of a firing squad. The good Bishop, Tony and yes you Judy, need to accept ownership of encouraging these haters. They organized the jihad that went after Phil Jones (and Mike Mann and Ben Santer) and they encouraged the ignorant mob. What Eli really expects is more of the same nonsense dealt out when the CRU emails were stolen, about how it was not really theft (death threats and wishes in this case) but someone inside who done it (everyone at CRU hates Phil Jones).
Oh right, just look at the comments over at the Good Bishops:
Although the all-caps 23rd Nov 2009 email comes very close to being an actual threat, only the 24th Nov 2009 email with the subject line "One thing to say" is an actual threat, in my opinion. Nevertheless, they are all nasty, venomous, horrible little screeds, and for the first time I actually feel sorry for Phil Jones for having to deal with that sickening bile. The poor spelling and grammar in practically all of the emails suggests to me that the people writing them are just idiotic trolls, but that hardly makes it any better. Yuck!Carrick gets a mirror

I hope we're all prepared to apologize to freedom-loving Tucci78 and ringmaster Judy Curry.
Now we see that Tucci78 is a paragon of sanity, a beacon of calm discourse, a reasonable person not so far from Judith Curry herself-- relatively speaking.
Anyway, there's lots of room under the big tent of climate contrarianism for all sorts, including incoherent, spluttering, unmedicated and heavily armed members of the "well regulated militia."
All hail the metastable minutemen!
I find it a bit sad that the e-mail addresses of the senders have been redacted. I'd love to see the names (under the perhaps naive assumption that several will have used their real e-mail addresses).

I’ll be the one to say it: I hope they die so that their deaths will draw attention to the truth of this issue. If they succeed, then it will be just another propaganda

…Maybe I’m just a cold hearted SoB, but in my opinion they need to freeze to death on that ice. The world needs to see the headline “Global Warming scientists …
I’m sorry, but if the deaths of everyone on that ice survey team helps raise awareness of and opposition to the global warming political train wreck then so be it. It needs to happen.
[Reply: Those are not death threats. ~dbs, mod.]
The reply was echoed by many accolytes.
Wishing/hoping/"demanding" death seems to be ok with them.
Let Jones quip that someone who died may be a good thing in a private email and they hit the roof.
Bishop Hill may be walking back. His commenters aren't. They double down that a) it's not really thaaat baaad b) Phil Jones and colleagues brought it on themselves.
Denier sites are almost by definition populated by conspiracy afficionados inhabiting the spectrum of paranoid crazy.
Very few of them are going to condemn the crazy, given that's what they essentially all are.
That's why they flock to denier sites in the first place. It grants them licence for what would in other circumstances be laughable or unacceptable behaviour.
Check out the comments at Tony's place. The ugly continues there...

Draw a deep breath and calm down. How could any reasonable person interpret "Your children and family will know because we know where you live. Expect us at your door to say hello" as threatening in any way?
And who could possibly be intimidated by "We have a right to bear arms and these perverted assholes will be wasted. We will have plans for you as well. If you bring your family all the merrier." That's simply a generous invitation to visit the United States.
Here's a person whose boundless love and affection for scientific progress is expressed by typing all capitals: "I AM CLOSE TO EXPLODING AND KILLING ONE OF THE BASTARDS ON SIGHT...AND I HAVE WORKED MIRACLES."
Now do you see? It's all just a misunderstanding; let the this polite request settle your agitation: "You fucken derelict and fraud; may I personally kick the shit out of you?"
I hope people are archiving this stuff so it is not lost to posterity.
Dr. Lumpus Spookytooth
whoa whoa whoa. Eli, nice try. You specifically said in your last post that there were death threats directed at Australian scientists and you had nothing. You posted an anonymous email address from an anonymous person that cannot be verified....YOU MADE ABSOLUTELY NO MENTION OF DEATH THREATS TO PHIL JONES, YOU LIAR.
"YOU MADE ABSOLUTELY... [splutter]"
Take no heed of the all-capitals. It's perfectly normal, not reflective at all of the mental state of the author. As the other fellow calmly stated, "I REALLY AM SITTING SHAKING WITH RAGE WITHIN MYSELF..."
"just idiotic trolls"
Am I alone in thinking the author of that remark would feel differently if his own children were dragged into a psychotic screed involving mention of visits at home and firearms?
The mental agility of these apologists never ceases to amaze.
Thanks, Eli.
But I'd have to speak up for Carrick there, without of course saying that he was right. He stood out because he had a lot to say - he always does. And tends to propound the opposition case (can I complain?). The extreme views were mostly elsewhere.
Nick, sometimes native caution should kick in. Carrick needed to dial it back.
Exactly what you'd expect from the right-wing authoritarian followers that infest the likes of CA, C Etc., WTFUWT, and BH. It's inevitable that ANU didn't get as badly hammered as CRU, because none of the ANU scientists (AFAIK) got caught up in the CT/denier dog-whistle call that ensued from Climategate.
I'm sure that Mike Mann's in-box is a treasure trove of love, too.
More than a few commenters on Bishop Hill's site have asked whether these e-mails are part of a "false-flag" operation.
Apparently, conspiracy theories run wide and deep in the fake-skeptic community.
Well color me stoopid, that is why they call me "Hey Stoopid".
Watt, a sick sad little world the denialati, who wrote these emails, live in. All trembling in fear of "An Inconvenient Truth".
Not nice at all!
Stephen: More than a few commenters on Bishop Hill's site have asked whether these e-mails are part of a "false-flag" operation.
That's standard operating procedure. When contrarians find themselves stampeded into a blind valley of lithic evidence they commence chanting to make the solid rock vanish.
"It's not real!" Somehow we always end up with that lyric.
PZ Myers' statement on his blog -
I reserve the right to publicly post, with full identifying information about the source, any email sent to me that contains threats of violence.
Public exposure and humiliation is the least that these types deserve.
Again, note the pattern:
1: Abuse.
2: Contemptuous denial that any abuse has occurred.
3: Grudging acknowledgement that abuse has occurred, but it's the abusee's own fault, combined with nit-picking about what constitutes a threat that would never be applied to verbal thrusts directed at the 'skeptic's own precious carcass.
4: Revisionist claims that any grudgingly acknowledged abuse is actually all a ploy anyway because we all know the abusees are actually the abusers.
4 steps. A foxtrot to Hell. Then just hose down the area and repeat.
And here's one of the worst offenders in this whole dismal, sordid fiasco, Denial's snivelling 'Rock Star' himself, just last month -
Maybe it's time someone did an FOI to see whether the UEA's dodgy and discredited Phil Jones really did get any of those "death threats" he claims to have received after Climategate and which allegedly drove him to consider suicide. Speaking for myself, if Phil Jones released a report claiming that grass is green I'd feel compelled to go outside just to double check.
Interpret your way out of this, little man. He will, of course.
There are plenty of historical precedents of this kind of hateful targetting of outgroups. None of them are pretty...
Stephen: More than a few commenters on Bishop Hill's site have asked whether these e-mails are part of a "false-flag" operation.
Once squarely arrived in the comfortable safehaven called 'denial' it is just a little effort to expand and deny another inconvenient truth as well.

These are just so many confessions of cowardice. They all have soo strong views, and not a single one ready to make his hands dirty. All hoping somebody else will.
These would all be death threats, but for the legal consequences.
That reminds me of ol' Moshpit

"The death threats are troublesome for two reasons.
1. Jones caregivers should be reading his mails if he is in such a state of mind.
2. I know his supporters are mad at him, but why are they writing death threats"
He's such a piece of sh!t.
If denialists were not cowards, they would be able to accept the reality of anthropogenic climate change based on the evidence presented to them.
Threats of violence are confessions of weakness--and carrying out the violence does not diminish the cowardice. As scientists, it is our duty to defend the truth even unto our own death. However, if we find ourselves tempted to commit violence, it probably means we are deviating from the truth. The truth ultimate is greater than any of us. The attempt to augment it with any other weapon only diminishes its effectiveness.
Carrick clearly has very poor comprehension skills, as do some of the unfortunate BH acolytes.
Well, either that is Carrick's problem, or his prejudice is preventing him from being objective-- that is, he is in denial about the ugly truth of those disgusting, vitriolic, violent and threatening emails.
Yes, as anon above points out, Moshpit now has rotten egg all over his disingenuous and duplicitous face. Lovely-- please rub his nose in it as much as possible bunnies.
