MarkeyMouse says? Exactly what happens University Research Departments, and Government Policy Agencies when someone shows Global Warming is all wrong.
They are silenced because of threat to the budget/employment, chain of command, organisational homogeneity etc.
Trees are great thermometers, yeah, yeah, yeah. Models are real, yeah, yeah, yeah.
Eisenhower warned:
"Today, the solitary inventor, tinkering in his shop, has been overshadowed by task forces of scientists in laboratories and testing fields. In the same fashion, the free university, historically the fountainhead of free ideas and scientific discovery, has experienced a revolution in the conduct of research. Partly because of the huge costs involved, a government contract becomes virtually a substitute for intellectual curiosity. For every old blackboard there are now hundreds of new electronic computers.
The prospect of domination of the nation's scholars by Federal employment, project allocations, and the power of money is ever present and is gravely to be regarded. Yet, in holding scientific research and discovery in respect, as we should, we must also be alert to the equal and opposite danger that public policy could itself become the captive of a scientifictechnological elite." http://coursesa.matrix.msu.edu/~hst306/documents/indust.html
If google were really interested in innovation, their web searches would be much more "context based" rather than still being primarily a popularity contest based on links.
The funny thing is that I don't recall all these free marketers and right wingers who complain about federal funding for science going and doing their own science research.
At least, not nowadays. Back in the good old days...
MarkeyMouse quotes: "..... “Hansen was never muzzled even though he violated NASA's official agency position on climate forecasting (i.e., we did not know enough to forecast climate change or mankind's effect on it). Hansen thus embarrassed NASA by coming out with his claims of global warming in 1988 in his testimony before Congress,” Theon wrote.
..... Theon declared “climate models are useless.” “My own belief concerning anthropogenic climate change is that the models do not realistically simulate the climate system because there are many very important sub-grid scale processes that the models either replicate poorly or completely omit,” Theon explained. “Furthermore, some scientists have manipulated the observed data to justify their model results." http://newsbusters.org/blogs/tom-blumer/2009/01/28/former-boss-rebukes-nasa-global-warming-alarmist-hansen-agw-skeptic
Malarkey Mouse, using John "I was Hansen's supervisor! Honest!" Theon as a source of information is a dumb idea. If he says something, then it's likely that the opposite is true.

If the money goes into stuff that goes KA-BOOM!!! then it's OK.
MarkeyMouse quotes again, for the hard of Comprehension: "Hansen who alleged Bush administration muzzled him -- did 1,400 on-the-job media interviews" (LINK) http://epw.senate.gov/public/index.cfm?FuseAction=Minority.Blogs&ContentRecord_id=B6A8BAA3-802A-23AD-4650-CB6A01303A65
"Hansen who alleged Bush administration muzzled him"
Yeah, yeah, when citing from John "I'm Hansen's sort-of-supervisor!" Theon doesn't work, how about citing from Marc "I'm a Swiftboater and I'm proud of it!" Morano! That has to work.
No, Malarkey Mouse. Hansen said that the Bush administration tried to muzzle him by issuing restrictions. He ignored those restrictions.
But of course, in your warped mind that makes Hansen the Medieval Inquisition of Liberal Fascism, or something. After all, you are Malarkey "socials = socialist = Stalinist!" Mouse.
"Boss, you remember at the Christmas party, you were telling me this idea you had about improving the frammistat?
Well, while I was on vacation, I sketched out what I remembered of your idea and it really made a lot of sense to me.
Now I was pretty smashed, it was late in the party, but I think the way your idea works out on paper really seems interesting.
I just thought, in case you wanted the sketches, I'd bring them to you.
If you do want to do anything send me back a copy, because I didn't keep one.
Now you also wanted to talk about the lunchroom menu portion size? I saw the departmental memo on that and got your message asking me to run up a spreadsheet ....?

Eli Rabett, a not quite failed professorial techno-bunny who finally handed in the keys and retired from his wanna be research university. The students continue to be naive but great people and the administrators continue to vary day-to-day between homicidal and delusional without Eli's help. Eli notices from recent political developments that this behavior is not limited to administrators. His colleagues retain their curious inability to see the holes that they dig for themselves. Prof. Rabett is thankful that they, or at least some of them occasionally heeded his pointing out the implications of the various enthusiasms that rattle around the department and school. Ms. Rabett is thankful that Prof. Rabett occasionally heeds her pointing out that he is nuts.

Oops.
But... I have a vivid recollection of those bootprints in the dust, where was it now...

Malarkey Mouse:
Yeah right, I recall that some people were trying to muzzle James Hansen but failed...?
(Of course, in your warped mind, this shows that Hansen = the Inquisition.)

And... Google? lolwut? It seems they've morphed from 'do no evil' to 'do a little evil'.

google?
give me a break.

That's so 90's.

NASA certainly has problems, but I don't find the video very insightful. The real story is much more complex and the comparison to Google is not apt.

Call me racist if you must, but none of the white people in that video can act.
MarkeyMouse quotes: "..... “Hansen was never muzzled "
Then, clearly, Hansen must not have been muzzled (if'n it came straight from "Malarkey's Mouth")
Theon declared “climate models are useless.”
Then, clearly, climate (and fashion?) models must be useless (if'n it came straight from "Theon's Thinking")
