The way things break

The Orbiting Carbon Observatory crashed before orbital injection. Evidently the cowling did not detach.

There is some talk of cobbling another one together about of spare parts, but even that would take time and money

I love how NASA characterizes the whole thing: "Unsuccessful launch" "Failed to reach orbit".

I'm sure Dick Cheney, George Bush and pals are probably grief- stricken.

They'll probably watch the video of the "unsuccessful launch" over and over with popcorn and beer. Nothing better to do now (thank the Lard for small favors)

On the bright side, JAXA reports on its Greenhouse Gases Observing Satellite "IBUKI" (GOSAT) acquiring "first light".

There is another satellite which claims to be able to monitor greenhouse gases. Anyone know of any results from the University of Toronto's CANX-2?
