Judith Curry Thinks Plans to Kill Her Colleagues Are Amusing

Judith Curry has endorsed plans for intimidating, beating, killing and maiming climate scientists as amusing but she probably would not do it herself.

In the comments over the Curry House, one Tucci 78 recommends
On the the contrary. When the “labels” fit, when they point out just how loathsome, just how evil, just how rotten these AGW fraudsters are and have always been, there should be no holding back, no restraint, no respite.
When the popular perception of these “Never let a crisis go to waste” leftist pseudoscientists is such that they find themselves at risk of physical assault whenever and wherever they show themselves in public, we can slack off.
and
Figurative speaking (heavens, we don’t want to be censored, do we?), the recipe goes: Knock them down. Kick them until they quit moving. Check for breathing. Repeat.
and what does the Chair of the School of Earth and Atmospheric Sciences at the Georgia Institute of Technology say to all this:
Well Tucci78 is regarded as high entertainment by many of the regulars here. Not so much accepting his sentiments, as being entertained by his presentation of them.
Now some speculate that this might be a Poe, but just in case it is not, Prof. Judith Curry who holds a responsible leadership position at Georgia Tech,  clearly believes that it would be amusing.

Eli eagerly awaits the reaction from Keith Kloor, Roger Pielke Jr., Richard Tol and Marc Morano.

  1. No dynamic range is available past the notch marked eliminationist; Curry is encouraging degeneracy of the worst kind.

    She's a very odd specimen.

  2. Tucci78 gets worse further on, and Judy doesn't even bat an eyelid. "What happened to that lass?" I ask. "Who shot her dog? Hansen, Schmidt, Emanuel, Dessler,...?"

  3. Tucci 78 is an infantile creep, and it speaks volumes that Curry is reluctant to shut off an infantile creep. Even one with murderous fantasies.

I suppose the problem from her point of view is that her blog is pretty full of creeps of one kind or another. If she started culling the ranks, how many hits would she have?

  4. Already posted this at Deltoid, but seems apropos here too.

Judith Curry outed herself as a lightweight, slipshod intellect in the Real Climate/ Kloor debacle over Montford’s novel in 2010.

The look of polite horror on her face at the Lisbon non-event as the leering, horsefaced Rog Tallquack pressed a cheap Josh t-shirt onto her (you can almost see her thinking ‘do these morons expect me to put on this piece of trash and pour a pitcher of beer over my tits or what...’?) left me thinking her flag nonsense was delusional but possibly well intentioned in 2011.

But now in 2012, she’s not just accepting of the crazies, but finding excuses for and pandering to dangerous, rabble rousing, lunatic lynch mob crazies.

Expectations for next year aren’t looking good for Dr. Curry.

The problem with this kind of "entertainment" is that it has the effect of encouraging those whose mental health is marginal to think that they have social permission to actually attempt a killing.

Its a very standard rhetorical technique used by Operation Rescue to induce people to carry out bombings and assassinations.

See, that's an illustration of how more of us are laughing (uncountable) than taking this seriously (one).

If the ratio's comparable at JC's, we're safe for a while yet.

I was about to adopt the little picture of K-wossname as my avatar, just to see if I could make people laugh as well as them. Him. Whatever.

Heck, K-guy wrote a large number of complete literate sentences that, taken individally, made considerably more sense than the pugilist and his fan(s) did.

But you have to consider how they all hold together or don't.

  24. Toleration and normalising of this species of exterminist imebecility is what leads to this.

Consult your history books to see what starts to happen next.

Ever been directly threatened with violence by redneck extremists? I have. It's not funny, quaint, or 'entertaining'. At all.

It's ironic that this should all have happened in the context of a discussion about that very billboard that was so completely beyond the pale, with Heartland subsequently all but wiping itself off the map with its striking inability to grasp that it is they that are the indecorous lunatics.

Seems other lukewarm fellow-travellers can't learn that message, either.

    Consider the following:

On the the contrary. When the “labels” fit, when they point out just how loathsome, just how evil, just how rotten these AGW-denying fraudsters are and have always been, there should be no holding back, no restraint, no respite.

When the popular perception of these “Never let a crisis go to waste” rightist pseudoscientists is such that they find themselves at risk of physical assault whenever and wherever they show themselves in public, we can slack off.

Now, attach a face to the victim lying on the ground. Still laughing? Try another face, or yet another.

Those are people who are supposed to be lying on the ground, kicked to death.

100% confident it's a joke? Absolutely for sure? Cross your heart and hope to die if you're wrong?

Dial your clock back 20 years, read the "joke" and ask yourself, "How did somebody come to find those words funny? How did they get there, and once they have, what else is possible?"

  26. Well color me stoopid, that is why they call me "Hey Stoopid".

    Indicators of a delusion: -

    1. The patient expresses an idea or belief with unusual persistence or force.

    2. That idea appears to exert an undue influence on the patient's life, and the way of life is often altered to an inexplicable extent.

    3. Despite his/her profound conviction, there is often a quality of secretiveness or suspicion when the patient is questioned about it.

    4. The individual tends to be humorless and oversensitive, especially about the belief.

    5. There is a quality of centrality: no matter how unlikely it is that these strange things are happening to him, the patient accepts them relatively unquestioningly.

    6. An attempt to contradict the belief is likely to arouse an inappropriately strong emotional reaction, often with irritability and hostility.

    7. The belief is, at the least, unlikely, and out of keeping with the patient's social, cultural and religious background.

    8. The patient is emotionally over-invested in the idea and it overwhelms other elements of their psyche.

    9. The delusion, if acted out, often leads to behaviors which are abnormal and/or out of character, although perhaps understandable in the light of the delusional beliefs.

    10. Individuals who know the patient observe that the belief and behavior are uncharacteristic and alien.

The delusions are logically constructed and internally consistent.

The delusions do not interfere with general logical reasoning (although within the delusional system the logic is perverted) and there is usually no general disturbance of behavior. If disturbed behavior does occur, it is directly related to the delusional beliefs.

The individual experiences a heightened sense of self-reference. Events which, to others, are nonsignificant are of enormous significance to him or her, and the atmosphere surrounding the delusions is highly charged.

Hmmm, JC, is truly playing with fire, by catering to the small minority, which will always bite the hand that feeds.

    Ouch!

  32. Mike Roddy: It's the water around Atlanta.

Living in Atlanta is kind of like living in Kabul, Afghanistan. Squint a bit and Atlanta looks pretty civilized; there are universities, museums, libraries, a fantastic symphony, all the trappings of evolved civil society. But Atlanta's entirely surrounded by the local equivalent of Taliban; the accommodation between a city connected to the world and bucolic backwardness threatens to implode at any minute. The greater state of Georgia is mostly run by robber barons.

The state legislature is just a stone's throw (ok, short cab ride) away from GaTech; the legislators themselves come from towns where strangers suffer hard stares and robber barons command allegiance.

At least it's not Alabama. Alabama's crafting a reenactment of the Middle Ages, with excellent results so far.

  36. If Judith Curry had any ethics or morals this is what she would have done.

She would have condemned the comment in no uncertain terms.
She would have deleted the comment.
She would have banned the poster from her site.
She would have notified authorities of the poster's email and IP address.

She has done none of the above. Instead she referred a threat to kick climate scientists to death as "entertaining".

One has to wonder. Does Judith Curry sit in on executions in Georgia for cheap entertainment?

Also, given her response to death threats made on her site, Curry must also find this entertaining:

Yeah, just like in Oklahoma City!

The Oklahoma blast claimed 168 lives, including 19 children under the age of 6,[1] and injured more than 680 people...Motivated by his hatred of the federal government and angered by what he perceived as its mishandling of the Waco Siege (1993) and the Ruby Ridge incident (1992), McVeigh timed his attack to coincide with the second anniversary of the deadly fire that ended the siege at Waco.

Hatred of the federal government and right-wing ravings. Sounds familiar!

    Tucci78:

Every There Oughtta Be a Law! impulse on the part of these vicious meddlers relies upon government employees in one way or another pointing guns at people and killing as many of them as necessary...
...anybody who pushes this normative carbon pollution crap is ipso facto a government-aggrandizing leftie-luser intent upon the violation of the lives, liberties, and property of innocent human beings...

Mixed with more frothing about his fondness for double-barreled .45 semiautomatics, the birth certificate of our "Mombasa Messiah" President, etc. There's a lot of material there; Tucci78 is wound up pretty tight.

Or clinic receptionists Shannon Lowney and Lee Ann Nichols, killed in two clinic attacks in Brookline, Massachusetts.

Or Robert Sanderson, an off-duty police officer who worked as a security guard at an abortion clinic in Birmingham, Alabama.

Or Dr. Barnett Slepian, shot to death with a high-powered rifle at his home in Amherst, New York.

Or Dr. George Tiller, shot and killed as he served as an usher at church in Wichita, Kansas.

And that's just those actually killed outright by so-called right-to-lifers, there's another nine at least who were shot or injured in bomb blasts or fires.

  44. arids: ...one of you might work yourselves up to pull a trigger one day...

That's how sorry lists like the one denoted upthread by anonymous are created. Spin up the flywheel of hatred too fast and poorly anchored bits on the periphery begin to tear off, creating havoc and destruction as they plunge into society.

Incessant chanting of ritualized expressions of loathing and imagined violence pushes energy into people like Timothy McVeigh, instills them with a sense of purposeful importance. McVeigh moved along a continuum of twisted mental velocity before he loaded his rental truck with explosives and struck a blow against the federal government and a bunch of toddlers.

It's remarkable that Judith Curry is so numb to the range of possibilities entailed by granting a soapbox to crazies like Tucci78. It seems as though her site has distilled itself mostly into a discussion area for so-called libertarians, if the thread in question is any example. Perhaps she shares the same "anything goes" philosophy as her followers?

    ReplyDelete
  45. 'Celery eater', eh?

Let's see; it provides no nourishment (digesting it saps your energy, in fact) and is really only likely to give you the shits.

    Bingo, then.

I will point out - as I thought was fairly obvious in the reversal I used above - that only people who don't feel hate-speech is targeted at themselves seem to be 'entertained' by it.

I have been in a situation where one city newspaper's hysterical and over-wrought reaction to a protest I was involved in meant that various local thugs apparently decided that they were being given a licence to turn up to threaten - and even beat - people. Again, consult your History books for precedents of what happens when derogatory language directed at an 'out' group becomes normalised to such an extent that they begin to be told by 'neutrals' that they should just 'get over it' and not make a fuss.

I have no problem with Curry playing host to other Libertarian ultras on that same thread as it only makes it very clear indeed that we are up against zealots engaged in what David Wojick even helpfully describes as 'ideological warfare'.

I'm positively happy that people get to read:

That the lukewarmers are aghast is irrelevant, as they are not Heartland’s constituency. Heartland has always been angry and anger is the political motif of the day. This is ideological warfare.

Heartland is clearly the leader at this point. Who else is even close among skeptical US think tanks? They have the conferences [oh, the irony!], the newsletter, theNIPCC reports, the Forbes articles, plus a bunch more. This is why they are under attack, but attack measures success.

Heartland speaks for the substantial number of skeptics who think CAGW is an ideological movement, at best, or even a hoax. Heartland is their emerging voice. The purpose is to stop the greens. The strategic direction is to channel widespread anger to get political results. (This is ideological warfare.) Joe Bast is in charge. What do you not understand?

and even the following, despite the obvious repetition of the same offence, as it only confirms that some people simply cannot learn and simply cannot see themselves from the outside -

I do not know the Heartlanders personally. But we share the moral conviction that the Greens are a menace to society, not unlike the Unibomber[sic], who acted on the same perverted principles.

He even (on May 24th!) claims that Heartland, with its new 'heavy duty' sponsors (guess who that refers to ?) is about to become the Right's answer to Greenpeace!

    Yeah, right.

But violent hate-speech is unacceptable, period. You either knock it on the head if you're in the position to do so or you're an enabler. Whose life could possibly be impoverished by [snip]ping or simply banning this garrulous thug?

That CE will not do so demonstrates how reasonable and impartial he actually is.

  61. "This exchange on Curry's blog is no different than Obama saying "if they bring a knife to the fight we bring a gun" or Joe Romm's "an entire generation that will soon be ready to strangle you and your kind while you sleep in your beds.'"

But it is different. It calls for attacking and injuring people now — people who haven't attacked Tucci78. They have not attacked anyone physically, nor AFAIK have they called for such attacks; they are merely doing science.

Obama's comment calls for having superior force of arms to repel an attack. See the difference?

Joe Romm predicts the attitudes of a future generation. In that comment, he advocates nothing. See the difference?

  62. Curry hates Michael Mann with a passion.

But I think his payback was brilliant - she is not mentioned in Mann's book The Hockey Stick and the Climate Wars, not once. That's how important she is.

Perhaps we should follow his example.

CE, you did not condemn the HI billboards. You said they were a mistake. You didn't say that they were wrong.

And you are wrong that all recent violence is coming from the left. Threats against Obama continue. Gay bashing continues. Threats against climate scientists continue.

Try taking off your rightwing glasses.

  66. Psychosis is politically oblivious and we do not live in a unique period of history where psychotic persons are exclusively of one political bent or another, points CE seems to have trouble grasping.

It's ironically amusing that psychosis often involves intractable, incorrect beliefs contrary to reality; it's hardly likely that the contrarian crowd are all psychotic but in terms of their behavior and impact there's little functional difference.

  68. Imagine Curry w/ family in tow at a restaurant when her children were wee ones. If Tucci 78 is any indication, setting limits on "acting up" just weren't part of her parenting kit'n'kaboodle.

As Philip Marlowe said to Norris about Carmen Sternwood, "You ought to wean her. She's old enough."

CE, allow me to explain the concept of right and wrong to you. We condemn things that are wrong, not because they set our cause back, but because they are wrong in a moral sense.

It is not a matter of associating everything we don't like with each other. It is absolute right and wrong.

Got it? Of course you don't. If you did, you wouldn't be the complete moral cretin we all know and love.

  76. Fetishization of the military is dangerous to democracy, OTOH so is demonization of the military. A balance needs to be restored.

All that being said it is our duty to feel sympathy with their families and a sense of loss for those who have died in wars. Hatred for those who sent young men into the meat chopper is also called for. The lesson of WWI was that all the generals should have been shot.

  79. Curry is a warning on the dangers of Mental illness and illustrative of it's viral nature. Simply put, the longer one gives relevance and succour to traits of Mental illness the more likely one will start to display similar symptoms.
As Science moves on from Climate change as hypothesis to merrily documentation, the field of the Human mind opens up as fertile ground for exploration and elephants in the room getting disturbed, such as the Schizophrenic nature of Religion. How can humanity be expected to act in a way properly cognisant of existential threat when a vast percentage are mentaly ill?

In line with the proposal of Mental Illness as virus I have seen 'it' for want of better nomenclature quite willing to sacrifice it's host by removing the hosts ability to respond to clear and present danger, this mechanism can be seen to be scalar in large numbers of humans exhibiting such inability re Climate change.

  80. Celery Eater,

I sypathize with your support for the military. I do not sympatize with the use to which you have put that support.

Bluntly, you were using your support for the military as a way to mock thosen who have taken other career paths and who have come up with conclusions that you do not like. You can support your country's military because that is the propper thing to to do. That support is degraded if you use ist as a way to attack political opponents on issues that have nothing to do with support for the military.

  81. This is clearly not an issue with Dr. Curry endorsing any form of violence because clearly she is not. Then again what makes this worse than the propaganda commercials that were recently released in the UK,where the students and the teacher were blown up for not "supporting" the AGW cause. Clearly Dr. Curry is being targeted by the propaganda machine to discredit her in any way it can to further the "cause". The way people blindly follow RC and Tamino is almost too much to be believed. There was a time when Rabbett was a more moderate and fair/balanced blog, but as political interests continue to exert pressure on the scientific community and professors, the fair and balanced goes out the window.

  83. Anonymous, Currie is permitting an atmosphere that encourages violence. That was the issue of this post. And your talk about blindly following, you are blinding yourself to the reasons why people agree with the scientific consensus. Most posters here do do because it makes sense and its opponents do not.
