After the US election the dour bunny is of the opinion that at a minimum Columbia University is about to receive a gift of GISS. Whether it would be silly enough to accept the donation is another story. Goddard, Langley, JPL,Ames and Glenn are in deep trouble too, as is the entire agency. In one scenario aeronautics would go to the FAA leaving a rump Confederate Space Agency centered around Johnson, Kennedy, Marshall and Stennis. Kennedy would be renamed Strom Thurmond Space Center.
Eli is not a happy camper.
Actually I think GISS is safe - it's the institute for space studies, not earth studies. Just a little redirecting of research priorities...

ReplyDeleteI agree with the WaPo final paragraphs, that it might not be a bad idea to wait and see for a bit.
ReplyDeleteMeanwhile, there is heavy pressure to push about the legitimacy of the election that is, I believe, gaining some ground. I have no doubt it was stolen via a variety of means, but proving it may not be easy, and the reaction would be fierce.

For the last eight years I have carried the following clipping in my wallet from the January 2009 New York Times describing Barack Obama’s first church service as president:
“For the first time, the main sermon was delivered by a woman, the Rev. Sharon E. Watkins, general minister and president of the Christian Church (Disciples of Christ). She related an oft-told Cherokee tale about a grandfather who explains to his grandson that within every person are two wolves fighting — one the wolf of anger, resentment, and fear, the other of compassion, hope, and love. The grandson asks which wolf wins, and the grandfather answers, ‘The one you feed.’ ”
I think this story is quite appropriate for our United States of America today.

ReplyDeleteAs I wrote over at Stoat's, the Trump plan is simply denialista driven, anti-science, pro-business, anti-regulation, standard GOP pablum. We seen it happen in Canada. We see it happening in Australia. Get rid of the science and (in their minds) you get rid of the justification for action.
Same sentiment, but Fergus' Bugblatter Beast analogy is more colorful :)
