I think this whole issue is looking really grim. But we also have a slew of other problems. USA militarism and imperialism seem to be running strong. Zionists continue to build settlements in Palestinian territory. Ebola. Russians trying to maintain a toehold in the Russian speaking sector in Ukraine. Latin American dabbling with the emerging Castroite style fascistoid "socialism". Africans having wars and violence. The new super capitalist China extending mercantilist tentacles everywhere. And research labs working on tiny chips the state can implant to monitor and control your moves. We are toast.

ReplyDeleteLast week, I abandoned working on a pseudo-Modest Proposal type story in which the rise of the right wing spread, well, like the plague. To coin a phrase. It was fed by a cynical liberal who decided that the only way to defeat the right wing was to bankrupt it by inciting thousands and thousands of competing fear-based fundraisers. Instead of the motto "Every man a king" of Huey Long, he posited, "Every man a Murdoch." The coup de grace for his own little office was coining the trope, "pollution gap." Under his railing, it became a nationalist frenzy that being unwilling to out-pollute the Chinese was tantamount to treason. (Is there anything but treason that something can be tantamount to?) We (the US) became so filthy and he became so filthy rich off the gag, that ... well, that would be telling.
