Sausage Making

Somebunny on the inside has been feeding the Guardian drafts of the G20 communiques.  The part on climate change started out a week ago as
We support strong and effective action to address climate change, consistent with sustainable economic growth and certainty for business and investment. We reaffirm our resolve to adopt a protocol, another legal instrument or an agreed outcome with legal force under the United Nations framework convention on climate change that is applicable to all parties at the 21st conference of the parties in Paris in 2015
which, weak as it was, was forced through against the wishes of the Australian hosts.  This has now morphed into
We support strong and effective action to address climate change, consistent with the United Nations framework convention on climate change and its agreed outcomes. Our actions will support sustainable development, economic growth and certainty for business and investment. We will work together to adopt successfully a protocol, another legal instrument or an agreed outcome with legal force under the United Nations framework convention on climate change that is applicable to all parties at the 21st conference of the parties [COP] in Paris in 2015. We encourage parties that are ready to communicate their intended nationally determined contributions well in advance of COP21 – by the first quarter of 2015 by those parties ready to do so.
with negotiations now on a final sentence
We reaffirm our support for mobilising finance for adaptation and mitigation, including the green climate fund.
The Australians are not happy.

UPDATE from the Guardian:  In another example of how bad the environmental situation in China is
the Finance Minister Zhu Guangyao, told reporters at the G20 on Saturday that China would work hard to ensure its emissions peaked before 2030. He said that if the Chinese economy developed too fast for the environment to sustain “we must make adjustments to our policies in a timely way so we can minimise the impact on our environment”
Coal is the plague.

  3. Oh yes, we are very happy watching our government unravel. Obama shirt-fronted Abbott (look it up, Peter Gleick did)

  4. Meanwhile, to show knowledge of another dandy Aussie word:

despite being shirt-fronted, Tony Abbott keeps spruiking coal.

  6. Wonderful seeing that idiot PM of ours get shafted by other world leaders. He's not viewed very well downunder... Most people see him as our George W Bush.

  11. I think this whole issue is looking really grim. But we also have a slew of other problems. USA militarism and imperialism seem to be running strong. Zionists continue to build settlements in Palestinian territory. Ebola. Russians trying to maintain a toehold in the Russian speaking sector in Ukraine. Latin American dabbling with the emerging Castroite style fascistoid "socialism". Africans having wars and violence. The new super capitalist China extending mercantilist tentacles everywhere. And research labs working on tiny chips the state can implant to monitor and control your moves. We are toast.

  13. Huh. Our clever plan needs work.

We tricked the USSR into overreaching and collapsing financially by pretending the US had Star Wars so they needed to build their own at any financial cost.

We thought we'd trick China into overreaching and collapsing ecologically by pretending we would buy all the crap and junk we were too smart to build locally if they'd build it for us at any ecological cost.

I think they're on to us.

  14. "I think they're on to us."

Last week, I abandoned working on a pseudo-Modest Proposal type story in which the rise of the right wing spread, well, like the plague. To coin a phrase. It was fed by a cynical liberal who decided that the only way to defeat the right wing was to bankrupt it by inciting thousands and thousands of competing fear-based fundraisers. Instead of the motto "Every man a king" of Huey Long, he posited, "Every man a Murdoch." The coup de grace for his own little office was coining the trope, "pollution gap." Under his railing, it became a nationalist frenzy that being unwilling to out-pollute the Chinese was tantamount to treason. (Is there anything but treason that something can be tantamount to?) We (the US) became so filthy and he became so filthy rich off the gag, that ... well, that would be telling.
