In Memoriam, Norbert Untersteiner

The University of Washington reports the passing of Norbert Untersteiner.  (1926-2012). While not part of Eli's scientific community, we knew him by what he did, Ice Station Alpha from the 1957 International Geophysical Year, something that inspired this young bunny then, establishment of polar science at the University of Washington and more.

Fittingly, Cryosphere Today  replaced the Arctic Ice image with one of Untersteiner in memorium.

  1. Ice Station Alpha being the probable location of that now famous photo of the USS Skate surfaced in broad daylight.
