Simon Donner Retorts

Andy Revkin, who is running to be the David Broder of climate science, has been criticizing those who took issue with the 16 WSJ moles for venturing from science into politics. Simon Donner retorts
The difference, I would argue, is twofold. First, some of the signatories to the letter actually conduct research at the interface of science (diagnosis, in Revkin's example) and policy (treatment). Second, we recommend a very general response to the diagnosis (reduce emissions) rather don't prescribe a particular treatment. Certainly an X-ray technician, after seeing hundreds and hundreds of X-rays and working with doctors over the years, is justified in telling a patient "Hey, you should probably put some type of a cast on that broken leg".

Whoops! Mr. Donner does not list his degree on his website. Gee, I wonder why.

Fred Singer is about 50 times smarter than Kevin Trenberth and climatology is the study of physics so your complaints are crap.

  2. Singer? Isn't he the guy who wants us all to smoke forty cigs a day to save the world for liberty and freedom?

Smart! Laughs all the way to the bank, I'd say.

So, Dr. Jay, let's try and quantify your statement. Hmm, it appears that Freddie boy has about a quarter as many publications at Trenberth and about a tenth as many citations...and almost none of Singer's work is in climate science.

Just curious, Jaybird, do you ever get tired of being so wrong all the time?

yep Dr. Singer recommends everyone smoke 40 cigarettes a day and that's why he doesn't smoke.

    @a_ray

it takes but 1 paper to blow Kevy Kev treebeard's papers to smithereens. Secondly, I would argue Singer's work with satellites is far more important than Trenbirth's fake missing heat.

    So he's a hypocrite?

"it takes but 1 paper to blow Kevy Kev treebeard's papers to smithereens. "

Let us know when that paper's out.

"Secondly, I would argue Singer's work with satellites is far more important than Trenbirth's fake missing heat. "

Then argue it. I'll get the popcorn.

  6. If I read this correctly, perhaps an analogy to what Andy is saying is that a doctor can tell her patient she has chronic obstructive pulmonary disease and the cause is smoking 40 to 60 cigarettes a day.

However the doctor would be stepping outside her area of competence if she were to suggest the patient no longer smoke tobacco products, such as cigarettes. And would definitely be stepping way outside of her field of competence if she were to point out that the money saved would allow the patient more disposable income to spend on enjoying and extending her life. (At 40-60 cigs a day, the patient would save $820 to $1250/month in Australia.)

I disagree that the former is outside the doctor's area of competence - and with the latter I say, so what if it's accurate and helps persuade the patient to seek to improve her health.

Jaybird: "it takes but 1 paper to blow Kevy Kev treebeard's papers to smithereens."

I must have missed that paper, Jaybird. Got a cite? I'd be surprised if you did...cause Singer's papers don't get cited much in and of themselves. Citations, Jaybird, if your paper don't get cited, it ain't worth sh*t.

Actually, it's not too surprising that Singer has not published any science in 30 years. He's been too busy getting paid for lying. How much you pullin' down, Jaybird?

you know that would have been a decent argument but since the true believers are now in control of the journals, peer review is worthless. True believers have made the amazing claim that feedbacks in the system magnify global warming by 3-400 hundred percent, and you guys are fools to believe that.

Besides that, nobody has to publish to prove Trenbirth wrong. For example, I haven't published anything but I have predicted the climate up to this point far better than Trenbirth or any of you here.

Care to prove that, Jaybird? Oh, wait. You can't. You haven't published anything.

Quick, Jay, run down to Walmart. They're having a special on tinfoil hats!

  10. Oh wait. Jay is really Roy Spencer in drag.

  11. You can't be serious Eli. Spencer is not that dumb and illiterate (see Jay post on Courtillot).

Nah, can't be ... It *must* be an elaborate Poe.

  12. Folks,

methinks that 'jay cadbury phd' is a person struggling with signficant delusion and related mental health issues. I don't think he is a 'poe'. therefore it seems cruel to lead him/her on to more fantastical and hateful statements. sure, such back and forths are part and parcel of funtimes in the blogosphere; but this instance of it seems a bit much.

I know s/he keeps asking for it, but perhaps a compassionate note sent to the individual's email address suggesting that s/he seek some professional counseling and appropriate meds?

if not, then please consider this to be such a recommendation, 'jay'.

    in compassion & dharma, Sloop

One might say that Dr. Jay is simply too dim to read his own diagnosis.

  14. Perhaps its the only enjoyment he can find, instatutionalized like that...
