ReplyDelete1st-Environment Canada doing massive cuts to its science division (11% of env canada is losing their jobs). 92 Physical scientists, 19 meteorologists...etc... ENV Canada's priority is "Air and water quality" rather than climate change according to their response to an inquiry.
2nd-Curry et al. have jumped in on a podcast by a guy who is in fact a "real" scientist... his analysis is incredibly flawed though and it makes me cringe to listen to. Blogosphere is up in arms.
3rd-Lubos over at WTFUWT posts an incredibly bad analysis of the hadcru stations...
The latest term for presenting a reasoned, evidence-based scientific argument is "thuggery"; used and possibly coined by Peter Wood, and endorsed in no uncertain terms by denizens of Curry's blog.

Q about the Heartland Institute - don't these make it a lobby shop?

The Institute sees its primary audience as "the nation’s 8,300 state and national elected officials and approximately 8,400 local government officials."
There's a letter from Heartland in the Tobacco Documents archive, soliciting money, saying that benefits of Platinum and Gold sponsorship included "special consideration of documents for promotion via PolicyFax", and "attention to issues of special concern in Intellectual Ammunition and other publications"(on p. 8+) - which, given Heartland's announced primary audience of legislators, would seem to amount to lobbying.
Unless I'm missing something.
OK, here's a speculation. That awhile back another scientist got the Charles Monnett treatment (not the Kafka part, rather the part where irked fossil fuel folks go on a witchhunt and turn up a conflict of interest); but this scientist took it quietly, and caved.
