Eli's Thanksgiving Gift to Sou

Well, ok, Eli is on occasion a trouble maker.  This all started when Willard Tony gave the keys to Tim Ball, the elder northern bunnies may remember him.  Well in the grand tradition of the Good Lord, Monckton (and anybunny following that link will understand why Eli calls him "Good Lord," maybe with a comma in there)  when you are on the grift you have to keep accelerating the crazy to move the crowd to the next level otherwise the well dries up.

So anyhow, Ball went full Godwin at WT's not only that but Agenda 21 and  Maurice Strong, international man of luggage made guest appearances.  Eli understands that Stephan Lewandowsky has down loaded the post and comments and put them under armed guard.  It was all there and more, maybe no moon landing but not much else was missing in the Thanksgiving melange.

Victor Venema brought this to the attention of Eli on ATTPs fairwell tour (how many times have the Rolling Stones milked that cow?):
Victor Venema says:November 23, 2014 at 11:12 pm[Mod: Agreed, thank you]Meanwhile in the real world, TIm Ball is citing from Adolf Hitler’s Mein Kampf to explain to his faithful how it was possible that all climate scientists would conspire against humanity and are trying to install a socialist world government via the UN.
Do also read the comments. Almost all WUWT-er are swallowing it hook line and sinker. One person links to his own post called “adolf-hitler-the-most-lied-about-man-in-history/”. I did not dare to click on it. Seems to be acceptable at WUWT. MCourtney is the local voice of some reason and ask people not to blame to “ethno-Bolsheviks”, but to honestly call them Jews.
Enjoy. The self-deconstruction of the mitigation sceptics.
Have asked Anthony Watts on twitter whether he read the post before publishing it. He did not respond yet. Would be nice to get a: I am Anthony Watts and I approve this message.
Sou, of course had already seen the post, and WT's first attempt to pull the foot out of his blog.  Eli pondered this a bit or there was some other thought of evil which gave him the prod.  Hmm saith the bunny, maybe we should ask the let's be friends crowd what they though of this.  So he did:

and received a reply from Richard Betts:
at which point Eli decided to give Sou a hammer:
Before getting to the nuclear weapons exchange this set off, Eli would like to explain that the Rabett has never exactly been of the camp that believes people in the real middle of the road aim their weapons only in one direction.  In fact, as readers might expect, he has often pointed this out about Ethon's favorite lilly liver treat, but if you think Ethon is looking for calories, take a look at Bart's Number 9.  That, dear bunnies, is a sure tell, so Eli set a little test, and mirth and laughter exploded.  His gift to Sou.

Tamsin Edwards and Richard Betts contacted Willard Tony Watts and he agreed to post their take on the matter:
Dr Tim Ball’s blog post “People Starting To Ask About Motive For Massive IPCC Deception” – drawing parallels between climate scientists and Hitler – doesn’t do anyone in the climate change debate any favours: in fact it seems a big (goose) step backwards. It’s especially frustrating to see him write this so soon after the productive dinner at Nic Lewis’s place, where the attendees agreed on the need to depolarise and detoxify the climate discussion. Anthony Watts wrote an extremely positive blog post about the evening, and there were many favourable comments from WUWT readers saying how great it was to have a more civilised conversation.
continuing in forlorn hope:
. . . We were also disappointed that so few commenters below the post distanced themselves from his views. We hope this is merely selection bias, and that many of you are simply sighing and moving on to the next post.
Some of the usual suspects try and keep their act clean, but others just can't help themselves.  Eli leaves the choice nut pickings to Sou.  Oh well, resisting is not something Eli is good at so just one:
Sorry I do not see how Dr Tim Ball’s post is in anyway offensive and neither did he call the alarmists Nazi’s as implied by Dr Betts and Dr Edwards.

He used an example of how people could be fooled by a big lie he could have used any other example from the Stalin era or middle ages where the King or Pope is God’s anoninted representative on earth.

The IPPC reports may well be the state of the art in man made global warming, although better men and women than me have shown otherwise. What cannot be called into question is the deception created by the summary for policy makers.

I paraphrase ” Hey guys get those names no ones going to check whether they have pHd’s or not.
This was pre Kyoto.
I pose one other queation imagine if all the billions wasted on climate change research and subsidies had been spent saving lives in the third world would it be tens of people or millions of people?

The big lie of the Nazi’s, Stalin, Pol pot resulted in millions of dead.<

The big lie of the climate change community resulted in ????????? still counting?
Oh, and most of them don't like Tamsin and Richard's science much.  But the best, the best dear bunnies is happening over at the tweets.

There are lessons in this.  One of them is break bread with anyone, but bring a GC/MS

In most case, the remarkable chemical analyzer located in, up and behind your nose should provide sufficient information about what exactly you're stepping into.

  4. Ball's post seemed to me to be pure desperation. Like he's so frustrated and on the verge of giving up so he finally gave it all he had and pulled the pin.

THe only comparison left is to Satan.

Tim Ball is hardly a climate science expert, and this has been admitted in a court of law.

After the Calgary Herald published an op-ed by Ball on April 19, 2006, whom the newspaper identified as the first climatology PhD in Canada and a climatology professor at the University of Winnipeg for 28 years, they published a letter on April 23, 2006 from Dr. Dan Johnson, a professor at the University of Lethbridge, who pointed out that neither of those descriptions is true; that Dr. Ball's credentials were being seriously overstated. Ball later threatened Johnson and the Herald and ultimately sued for defamation.

In their Statement of Defense filed in Court, the Calgary Herald submitted the following:

    1. "...that the Plaintiff (Ball) never held a reputation in the scientific community as a noted climatologist and authority on global warming.

    2. "The Plaintiff has never published any research in any peer-reviewed scientific journal which addressed the topic of human contributions to greenhouse gas emissions and global warming

    3. "The Plaintiff has published no papers on climatology in academically recognized peer-reviewed scientific journals since his retirement as a Professor in 1996;

    4. "The Plaintiff's credentials and credibility as an expert on the issue of global warming have been repeatedly disparaged in the media; and

    5. "The Plaintiff is viewed as a paid promoter of the agenda of the oil and gas industry rather than as a practicing scientist."

    Ball dropped his lawsuit.

  5. With so much nitpicking, may I do some nitpicking?

The post kinda suggests that Sou asked what Tamsin Edwards and Richard Betts thought of the post of their dinner friend, which is not right.

The link in my comment is wrong. The next comment gave the right one. Would be nice if you could correct it here, because that next comment is not visible here.

The last sentence misses a dot.

The English may have the impression that English is their language. In old novels children are forced to read this may still be the case. On the interwebs English is an international language. GC/MS does not belong to the 2000 word vocabulary of that language. My condolences with the loss of your language, but it also has advantages.

  6. Victor, "GC/MS" isn't English even to the English. It belongs to the specialized vocabulary of Eli's actual profession. It's an acronym for "Gas Chromatograph/Mass Spectrometer".

  7. As scientist from Bonn I sometimes have to represent Germany. I always make clear that I am Dutch and that I did not start the war.

(I still do not get the joke, but then us Germans are not known for our sense of humour.)

  8. Flatlanders.

Oh well, there are two jokes. The first is that there are some dinners where you would do well to have a food taster. The other is there are some dinners where they may serve you very unpleasant animal wastes.

In both cases the availability of high quality chemical testing instrumentation may save you some unpleasantness

VV: "(I still do not get the joke, but then us Germans are not known for our sense of humour.)"

I think the joke is that a GC/MS may have a longer useful life than a food-taster.

  10. Following David Appell:

recall that Ball is being sued for defamation (separately) by Andrew Weaver and Michael Mann.

At least as of Feb, both cases were proceeding normally.

Gonna "borrow" that. It eloquently nails the whole "but alternative energy is killing children in Africa" line of "skeptic" argumentation.

  14. Big legal trouble for serial libelers from Canada today. Ezra Levant , the guy who calls Alberta filth ethical oil , lost a defamation case and has to cough up $80,00.

Ezra babbled about free speech and public figures and fair comment. The judge spoke of facts and diligence. Poor Ezra, found in a court of law to lack basic journalistic skills.

Tim Ball better settle quick or he may meet the same embarrassing and impoverishing fate.

Now , it we could get the Stein silliness moved to a Canadian jurisdiction.

  15. That's $80,000 not $80,00. Reckless disregard for the truth adds the extra 0.

  16. While it's picky etc. to criticise minor errors I was ammused to see that Tim Ball does not even Tim does not know know how to research the etymology of a word:

It is why I prefer the term cabal, a secretive political clique or faction, named after the initials of Clifford, Arlington, Buckingham, Ashley and Lauderdale, ministers to Charles II.
    From http://www.merriam-webster.com/dictionary/cabal.

    Origin of cabal.

French cabale cabala, intrigue, cabal, from Medieval Latin cabbala cabala, from Late Hebrew qabbālāh, literally, received (lore) First Known Use: 1614.

Charles II was born in 1630. How very precocioius to have a set of ministers before birth.

Silly pettiness, in a way, but possibly reflecting other research habits?

I also liked “The computer models produced the pre-programmed results” assertion

Obiouisly confusing the program M&M gave Wegman with real climate modeling.

  17. Ezra Levant? Running roughshod over journalistic ethics? Where's the fainting couch when you need it? (Of course his career as a right wing mouthpiece on 'Fox News North' will not suffer a jot...)

Regarding Weaver vs Ball and Mann vs Ball, Ball seems inclined to double down, not settle.

Although separate actions, both use the same lawyer, Roger McConchie, as in author of Canadian Libel and Slander Actions, a massive tome that I happen to own. It's surprisingly readable and actually useful, even though Canadian law is of course different.
One of Roger's specialties is cyberlaw.

    No moon landing ?

Clearly less a case of Springtime For Godwin than one giant goosestep backwards being small step for a Mann

  24. " You couldn't make it up."

The good news is that the majority of the heavy lifting on behalf of the Tarsandinistas is done by fewer than a dozen denialati, so the six degrees concept amounts to actuarial overkill.

The interesting news is that for all the PR money spent , their passionate opponents numbers are not that many orders of magnitude larger-- nor, considered as an intelletual cottage industry, was the Energy Crisis cohort.
