Lubos' mind turned like the vanes of a wind-powered turbine, chopping his sparrow-like thoughts into bloody pieces

that fell onto a growing pile of forgotten memories. - Sue Fondrie, winner of the 2011 Bulwer-Lytton prize more or less
Ethon perched high above the seething ruins of Lubos' mind in Central Europe, thought these thoughts as he read Motl's difficult attempts to sever the horror of Norway's recent days from the terrible Czech's preferred stream of consciousness.
At any rate, I don't think that today, in 2011, there exists a problem in Europe that could even remotely justify the killing of dozens of this young people who attend a summer camp. Sorry but this looks unforgivable to me - unforgivable at the level of a death penalty which doesn't exist in Norway.
Motl, horrified at the carnage, admires the political analysis:"But holy cow: this is quite a piece of text for a young farmer."
The 1500-page manifesto says many things and if I were given this text before the murder and had the freedom to say what I thought about it, of course that I would agree with a significant part of it. Well, as you can see, I just indirectly said that I agree with many things in it. There are also many things I disagree with. After all, he enumerates the "real allies" he thinks to have in various countries and in the Czech Republic, this includes the traditional neo-Nazi parties that people like me have no proximity with (and that are largely defunct these days, anyway).
Somehow Lubos forgot to think about his allies, folk like Chris Monckton who fronts for the UK Independence Party, a nativist political party in a telephone booth hiding behind a law and order front (never seen that before, have you buckies?), and Glen Beck, who attacked the dead for being at a non Glen Beck indoctrination camp. Also, somebunny, obviously forgot to clue the lad in that most of Breivik's stuff was lifted (cut and pasted in modern parlance) from Lubos' folks like Monckton and a nativist Norse blogger fjordman and, of course, the Unibomber. What was left was a jumble of loser rant.

Ethon wonders whether there is hope for Lubos. Is there an awakening that mad words, no empathy can set off mad killers? Does growing older mean you can turn in your attack dog style? Why is that important? Look to the comments in reply to Lubos' thumb sucker
Just like McVeigh, he has no regrets and no contrition over the immense human suffering that he has caused. Both of these guys would do it again in a heartbeat if they could. They both were so divorced from human compassion and sympathy that they lacked the ability to empathize with the suffering of others.
Or is Motl the Bulwer-Lytton second prize winner
As I stood among the ransacked ruin that had been my home, surveying the aftermath of the senseless horrors and atrocities that had been perpetrated on my family and everything I hold dear, I swore to myself that no matter where I had to go, no matter what I had to do or endure, I would find the man who did this . . . and when I did, when I did, oh, there would be words. - Rodney Reed

So he has no *moral* objection to the act ...

  2. I think the most important thing to take away is how to handle the debate. Being involved in the Swedish climate debate similar rantings as thous by Breivik is not unusual enough... moderating comments should be done by any responsible outlet, that goes for newspapers as well (or just turn them of).

(not creating conspiracy theories would be good to but that will never happen, it is sad to see that journalists take them serious though.)

  3. The Motl -- "But holy cow: this is quite a piece of text for a young farmer."

Whose dad happened to be a retired diplomat. I don't think the son used laces to tie below the knees of his tattered trousers, somehow. He even mentions a middle class upbringing in his "manifesto", and spent part of his childhood in London while his dad worked at the Norwegian embassy there.

More craziness from Italy: Italy MEP backs ideas of Norway killer Breivik

"An Italian MEP has described the ideas of Norway's self-confessed mass killer, Anders Behring Breivik, as "good" and in some cases "excellent"."

Anyone know the Italian for, "What a knobhead"?

  4. dhogaza,

    It's much worse than that.

"I don't think that today....there exists a problem in Europe that could even remotely justify..."

    But tomorrow?........

  6. With that madcap Monckton Malarkey on Garnaut not long ago I have been pondering on the Motl effect on the mind of Breivik. Does Motl not realise the effect his rantings could have. Any sane person who has had the misfortune to read one of Motl's hate fuelled rants is only to well aware of the possibilities.

Words, as well as actions have consequences as history informs.

“The complete lack of elementary morality of these people is just stunning. Those people may feel comfortable in their ivory towers but let me tell them that they’re human trash and organized criminals and we will eventually give them what they deserve. No Tora Bora will be safe enough for them.”
    Lubos Motl, July 2nd, 2010

"Left-wing and various anti-West politicians are no longer the only ones who may secretly build on some "attack dogs" in the background while publicly dismissing any violence."

  8. Lubos Motl, June 2010: “Would it have been legal for Anthony to shoot a couple of these AGW terrorists?”
“I am interested in it because I want to find the optimum way how to behave if something like that happens to me.”
“If I end up in an insane blog like this one, I may always press alt/f4. But a more physical tool would be needed if something like that occurred in my house,.”

Nice of you not to mention this Motl-quote in your link:
"There are way too many aggressive left-wing activists everywhere, they’re spreading like plague, and it would be a good idea to regulate their excessive self-confidence by shooting a couple of the most annoying ones."

  11. Motl, in an article about John Schellnhuber, next to a portrait of Reinhard Heydrich:
»This Schellnhuber's lookalike, soulmate, and countrymate was serving in the years 1941-1942. Because it turned out that he was trying to help the set of people who would live in the 1000-year empire in the future, rather than the living generations of the Czech lands, our democratically elected government in London (representing the living generations of the Czech lands, rather than hypothetical future generations of the Third Reich) fired this blonde beast in May 1942 - by fireguns. Goodbye, Mr Heydrich.«

  12. oh, also this from November 2011: »What these Green fascists want is to attach a new yellow star to Fred Singer's skin - and to the skin of anyone who has ever met him and exchanged some information or friendly sentences. [...] Will the German policemen shoot quickly enough to neutralize the green radicals once they switch from disgusting verbal attacks to physical attacks? The German environmentalism has showed to be on the same path as the German national socialism in the late 1930s and it's time for the German Government to take notice of this inhuman and aggressive movement.«

  13. The prose on the Bulwer-Lytton site is so much clearer than anything from Lubos. Much more entertaining too. Thanks for the link Eli.

  14. Hank, Harvard Philosophy chair W.V,Quine took some serious Long Table ribbing when he admitted that, as an undergraduate, the Unabomber had scored 98.9 on his modal logic exam

The laughter stopped when he added :

" It's too bad he never took my moral calculus course."

  15. A few weeks ago, I mused on theoretical physic boards for some reason (I don't remember why, maybe my tendency as a geophysist to look at theoretical physicists as if they were from outer space). I stumbled onto a board where several physicists were talking about someone, obviously considered as a crank with ridiculous ideas (it happens everytime everywhere), but also offensive. The moderator of the board received apparently several hate mails and things like that. It was in the early 2000 apparently.

Guess who am I talking about ?

i will try to find again this board.

captcha : bacarthy. A bit more perseverance Herr Motl, you can reach his level !

  16. Try Not Even Wrong by Peter Woit. Peter is string hostile but NEW only goes back to 2004.

Lubos was spewing on sci.environment way back, and he may have been on more theoretical physics USENET boards before then.

See Assistant Professor Lubos Motl’s ingenious attack on Lee Smolin,2006, bookmarked long ago, just in case. Following some of the links will offer further entertainment.

More recently (2009), see APS is reviewing its climate stance, which has a picture of Will Happer, and starts:
"Obnoxious bureaucrats in the American Physical Society... f* you."

He also whacks at Rudy Baum (a good guy), but as people may have noted, "Assistant Professor @ Harvard" ceased a while ago.

  19. I came across this blog post in which physicists are discussing whether someone has disproved Bell's theorem. You-know-who pops up and is arrogant but tame by the standards of quotes provided by Robert M., Lars K. and others. What's interesting is the enabling that the other posters do for Motl.

  22. I have never turned any mind of mine. Despite his brutal mass murder which is horrible, I agree with a significant portion of Breivik's political opinions, have written an explicit article where I write this fact. I have also surely endorsed Lord Monckton and Glenn Beck in many cases and will continue to do so, and to be explicit, I also agree that the camp in Utoya was analogous to the Hitler Jugend of Germany of the mid 1930s or so. None of it justifies his mass murder but at the same way, this murder won't do an iota for me to denounce my values.
