Ya gotta get a horse.

It's melt season up north and the ice jockeys are mounting their ponies. Michael plays the chalk with nsidc's classic, Stoat throws the IJIS spaghetti against the wall, and Tony Watts, why he wants to sell you the Norwegian entry with his Aussie girlfriend upside down in the saddle.

Eli, Eli prefers to look at dirty pictures from the Reeperbahn

  1. There's a pony in there somewhere.

  3. I think I've got 50 euros on the minimum area this year being less than 2005's. I should check.

  4. The steepening slope shown on nsidc's June 10 plot is NOT FUNNY.

  5. The pix say nothing about whether the ice is thick enough for ringed seals to den in. We could lose the entire Arctic habitate without setting any records.

The focus on 2-d sat. images is NOT FUNNY. Volume of ice is what we should consider.

  6. It would have been a good thing to do, but we don't have very good records of ice volume. Of course, you could always do an RPSr and insist that we go back and measure it along with the heat content of the oceans.

  7. Our Navy has a craving to play with its sonar toys off the California- Oregon coast. They could do that in the Arctic and bring us back a good estimate of ice volume (water temperatures, and currents). I would feel sorry for the marine mammals up there, but at least their pain would be balanced by some good ice volume data.

They would get the training they want, we would get the data we want, and it would be win-win for everybody but the narwhales.

  8. The problem is that to be useful now, you would have to send the navy back 40-50 years in time. One of the things that Gore did as VP was to get the Navy to declassify some information from cruises under the Arctic ice pack, but the coverage and amount of the data was not really enough

  9. If you only read Anthony's update on that CO2 freeze fiasko, you could be fooled into believing, that it all was a reasonable debate about a point that was indeed debatable. If.

  10. Those photos don't prove anything.

Haven't you and your cohorts revealed the use of photos to most certainly be un-science?

  11. You're right, Biker, but then Eli didn't claim that they prove anything. All he said was "Developing."

  12. Besides which, they are not pictures, but reconstructions of satellite measurements.

  13. Eh, what?

No doubt all these diagrams are nothing more than a distraction from the most pressing issue in our national debate -- namely, that Al Gore Is Fat.

  14. No bi, Al Gore is plump, Eli is fat, ask Ms. Rabett

  15. Thanks, Eli, for showing us that the Artic ice extension and density is going back to its older levels. Had we satellites back in 1922 we'd seen the same graphs: from very little ice (much less than 2007) to lots of ice (as it is usual in the Arctic).

  16. Eduardo, Eli took the Wayback machine, and quite frankly dear, you are hallucinating.

  17. Envisat ASAR is an option, or is it?

I'll have to say reliable data is harder to get than one would guess.

So what is up with the Norwegian entry? I am inclined to dismiss it due to some of the rather rapid ups and down in the past, but does anyone have anything more rigorous on why they show close to normal ice conditions when everyone else doesn't?
