Makin a list, checkin it twice

for those who have been sideswiped as well as the charter members of the Morano Denialist Society 400, or as Stoat would put it, the complete Nutters List. Some of these folk are entirely innocent and have been sandbagged by Morano, Richard Tol is one, Ray Kurzweil is another, there are more, esp the economists, but Eli thought he would simply put out the list. The descriptions are from Morano. The numbers at the end of a line are the number of different references to a person on the list. The folk at Desmogblog are already chewing it over. Eli will be slicing and dicing at the deli this week. You can find the TV weather folk tranch at OISM's Baby also a nice poster you can put on your wall.

UPDATE: Bunny Labs is expanding the project to provide informative (and amusing) links with information about the listed. Send your entries to Eli B. Rabett, c/o Bunny Labs, West Sockpuppet Lane, Climate Climax, NO. OTOH, it's easier and more effective to simply place a comment below.
UPDATE:
There appear to be two versions on the EPW site with minor differences, probably due to the chaotic nature of document. The first version is here and the second is here. For example, Roger Pielke Sr. is on the first list and not the second. That, at least is the current situation but who knows which is the official one. (Some changes made in the text to accomodate the fact that there are innocents on the list).

  1. (This might be a duplicate; when I do a preview & Click on a hyperlink, it seems to throw away the comment window. (?))

    1) The link at the top goes towards the 100-list, not the Morano 400.

    2) John McLean (an SPPI contributor I've seen before) actually appears in 4 distinct places, and since the highest degree that I've seen Mclean provide anywhere was "Barch (Melbourne)" I was slightly curious to find the 4 refs by Morano:

"Recent research by Australian climate data analyst Dr. John McLean"

"An analysis by Australian climate researcher Dr. John Mclean"

"Australian climate data analyst Dr. John McLean"

"John McLean, Climate Data Analyst, computer scientist, Melbourne, Australia" (that's from list of 100).

    3) I posted this set of data about Mclean at Deltoid, and there are now several threads there, with a truly fascinating extract at nexus6 of a discussion at Marohasy 1, followed by more at Marohasy 2, which also generated a definition of scientist I haven't seen before:

"BTW While I am unsure what John McLean's exact university qualifications are, it has been my observation that he is a committed and hard working 'student in research' which I believe qualifies him as a scientist. I understand the notion that all knowledge starts with a university degree is a relatively recent one.

  2. Actually, Eli was just noting that Stoat had come up with the idea of a nutters list before Morano. There also appear to be at least two lists on the EPW site (see update), and did you see that Jennifer is on the list?:)

I'm making some minor updates also

    ReplyDelete
  3. Note: one might consider the wisdom of calling this a "nutter's list"; as far as I can tell, this is Marc Morano's own list in which there ar two variables:

    relevant expertise as climate scientist:
    0: none, 1: vaguely-related, 2:some, 2: a lot.

    denialism:
    A: absolutely
    B: mildly skeptical
    C: unclear
    D: no way [cherry-picked quote]

and in some cases, people have been added to the list via cherry-picking, or quoting an offhand comment. For instance, it's counterproductive to call Borlaug (1C?) a nutter.

    ReplyDelete
  4. Maybe Pielke Sr. called someone up and said "Take me off you're piece of s**t goddamn c**k-s**king list before I f***ing sue!!!!"

Or something similar. He probably won't be the last.

(Also, Tol has been a bad boy in the past and is just starting to come around. Don't go too easy on him)

  5. Sweet. Thanks for this. I'm sure I'll use it, or some sorted variation thereof, as I dive into the various names, connections, level of expertise, etc.

  6. Improvement.
I expected Jennifer to be on the list.

And maybe we need 0X or 1X categories for distinguished scientist in some other area, near end of career, goes off deep end, starts writing junk with great passion. #5 might fit that.

    ReplyDelete
  7. Wow, what a list.

Has anyone looked at the IPCC scientist's list with the same zeal?

Go through THAT list with this idea:

    "relevant expertise as climate scientist:
    0: none
    1: vaguely-related
    2: some
    4: a lot.

    denialism:
    A: absolutely
    B: mildly skeptical
    C: unclear
    D: no way [cherry-picked quote]

Because that's the "consensus" we're led to believe. Don't forget to single out the weathermen, statisticians, etc from that list.

    ReplyDelete
  10. Well, Mickey, of course the IPCC contributors list available. You could, of course actually look at it instead of mouthing off.

    Here is a start

    ACHUTARAO, Krishna
    Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory
    USA
    http://www-pcmdi.llnl.gov/about/staff/Achutarao/index.php

    ADLER, Robert
    National Aeronautics and
    Space Administration
    USA http://www.nasa.gov/mission_pages/hurricanes/bios/adler_bio.html

    ALEXANDER, Lisa
    Hadley Centre for Climate Prediction
    and Research, Met Office
    UK, Australia, Ireland
    http://www.bom.gov.au/bmrc/clfor/cfstaff/pandora/lisa.html

Care to go through the rest of the list? They even alphabetized it for you. You will find that everyone is a climate scientist. You won't find very many denialists

(Christy for one, but that is about it)

    ReplyDelete
  11. Cybthis, I wouldn't read too much into that. There are an awful lot of forecast meteorologists/weatherpeople. Looking at the two big forecast outfits based in the U.S., AccuWeather has about 800 employees but only four appear on the Morano list, while of the Weather Channel's 1200 employees none appear. Those numbers are from memory and may be total employees as opposed to forecasters as such, but you get the idea. Notice also that the list appears to be pretty thin when it comes to the people who run the training programs for the forecasters.

  13. Cynthia:

In a large population, you can find almost anything.

The American Meteorological Society has 11,000 members, and it has a very clear position on AGW [yes].

There may be more to it than that; maybe some weather forecasters view climate science as infringing on their turf, or something. There may be some Dunning-Kruger Effect in operation as well.

  15. Whether good or bad, there's clearly a thick cloud of politics hanging over climate science these days...

Steve and John (Mashey, that is ;~): thanks for sharing your thoughts on this juncture between weather and climate...

And John (Mashey) perhaps you're right: a sorta sibling rivalry is taking place between weather and climate.

First the older child grows up to become a star as a weather forecaster. But then the younger one comes along becoming an even bigger star as a climate guru...

So it seems, big brother is showing a little envy towards his kid brother...

  16. I haven't read all the commentary but:

Some changes made in the text to accomodate the fact that there are innocents on the list

These are important to point out. It shows even the dimmest of bulbs what a sham these reports are. I would make a "list of the innocents". Even if these deceptions are limited in number it is still important to show these promulgations contain clamant and grievous errors.

  17. TV Weathermen is one thing but TV Gardeners???

Ask anyone from the UK if Alan Titchmarsh qualifies as a prominent scientist and you'll be met with the smile of one indulging a naive child. He's a popular guy, best known for hosting the weekly 'Gardener's World' TV program and writing popular novels and memoirs ('Trowel and Error' geddit?). The proposition that he acts as a counter to the IPCC and the scientific concensus, with his Diploma in Horticulture and honorary degrees, reveals the depth of the desparation over there in the contrarian corner.

  18. Oh, my!

So, Team Inhofe has scoured the globe and has located *cough* "400" *cough* scientists who disagree, to greater or lesser extents, with the widely-held consensus view on climate change.

I'm not yet sure if its more appropriate to point out that only a fraction of the list are actually active climatologists to begin with, that there are people on the list identified as climatologists who aren't, that there are people on the list who aren't even in a related field of science whatsoever, or, perhaps, just point out that even if all 400 were legitimately scientists in related fields, what a pitifully small percentage this is of worldwide scientists.

    ReplyDelete
  19. Now one of these prominent scientists - and it is driving me bonkers, not remembering which - if you google for his name and "first amendment" and "vagina", you'll find that he's achieved prominence in a different dimension.

He wasn't one of the weathermen, I remember that much.

  21. According to the original composers of the list, I am included for arguing that the Stern Review is alarmist and incompetent.

Dasgupta, Gollier, Mendelsohn, Nordhaus, Varian, and Weitzman -- generally considered to be top economists -- all have gone on record critizing the Stern Review.

I have yet to meet a qualified economist who thinks that the Stern Review is a solid piece of academic work.

By this reasoning, the vast majority of the economics profession should be on the list.

"I completely agree with fourhorses that the ultimate aim is to create a situation where the CPC can say assertively, "The science no longer supports the assumptions of the Kyoto Accord."

However, politically this cannot be done overnight without the Conservatives taking what they consider to be an unacceptable hit (do people think they would really lose votes with this statement (from Canadians who would otherwise vote for them, that is?).

So, the solution put on this site a little while ago by Tina is one I would support as well - namely, they don't take sides at all and admit they don't know and so are holding unbiased, public hearings in which scientists from both sides are invited to testify. The resulting chaos, with claims all over the map, will do enough to thoroughly confuse everyone (which is appropriate, actually, since the science is so immature and, frankly, confusing) and take the wind out of the sails of the "we are causing a climate disaster and must stop it" camp entirely, and the CPC can quietly turn to important issues without really having had to say much at all.

    What's wrong with this approach?

I have been researching climate cycles for some 30 years or more and will be posting a "Major" update and finding on my website within the next few weeks http://globalweatheroscillations.com/GlobalWarming.html.

The update will include major finding of a "Primary Forcing Mechanism" PFM that controls the global warming cycles. It is this cycle that controls approximate 200-year recurring cycles.

The findings will be posted on the website around February 1, and then talked about on IP Ear Radio beginning in early February (I am the co-host of the radio program "Politically Incorrect Weather Guys".

  29. "1. Dr. Habibullo Abdussamatov, head of Space Research for the Pulkovo Observatory in Russia."

Is Habib really the head of space research? I have never been able to find a department of space research at the Pulkovo Observatory, but Habib is listed under their Laboratory of Solar Physics - not the head of that department either, which is Alexander A. Solov'ev. When I initially looked up Habib two years ago, it was the same.

Maybe I just missed their Space Research department and maybe Habib really is the head of said department, but I am starting to believe that when it comes to qualifications he is the russian tim ball.

  30. You have not by any chance published your great discovery in Energy and Environment have you David of global weather oscillations.

We have, BTW seen a lot of similar claims from a lot of people (the late Theo Landscheidt comes to mind.)

Somehow Eli is reminded of the story of a suddenly rich business guy purchasing a yacht and a captain's cap. He invited his mom on board.

He said: Look Mom I'm a captain

She said: To you you're a captain. To me you're a captian. To a captain you're no captain.

  31. So, maybe he was the First PhD in Historical Spaceology, and a Professor of Climatology for 32 years, and therefore the only one qualified to comment on AGW and space. That's quite a catch for their list.

  32. Why don't those of you in the AGW cult turn the knife on yourself. How many of your prized scientists are paid by Exxon or a part of the oil industry?

Ad hominem attacks will NEVER win an argument against an intelligent, reasoning, rational individual. You will simply have to start addressing the issues if you want to win.

Every time I try to find the hard facts verifying whether Global Warming is caused by man I am amazed to find that they are actually more anecdotal than actual hard facts.

For all those stupid enough to by the line, "If its really as bad as they say it is. We have to do something cause we are screwed." Here is a parallel analogy:

What if I told you that if you drove your car faster than 2 mph it would explode. Then I made up a fancy chart showing how the increased heat generated by the engine at operating at speeds over 2 mph caused spontaneous combustion. So you are continually late to work, in spite of the fact that their is no evidence that it will explode. When your boss fires you for being late to work you protest that I your car would explode. When he calls you a fool. You reply, "If what this guy said is true, I'd rather be safe than sorry."

We know the car won't explode. What happens when years from now someone finds a driving factor that is driving both temperature and CO2 levels. Will you be laughed at like the flat earthers of yesteryear? Probably. I'm pretty sure I'm going to be one of those laughing at you when the evidence proves you all wrong, if I'm still alive.

  33. Looks like I checked in at an interesting moment. Your first clue, "Barry", would be something like this at the back of the paper:

    "this paper was
partially supported by grants from the Charles G. Koch Charitable
Foundation, American Petroleum Institute, and Exxon-Mobil Corporation."

    Published as a "Viewpoint":

    Dyck, M.G., Soon, W., Baydeck, R.K., Legates, D.R., Baliunas, S. Ball,
T.F, and Hancock, L.O. 2007. Polar bears of western Hudson Bay and
climate change: Are warming spring air temperatures the "ultimate"
survival control factor? Ecological Complexity 4(3): 73-84

    "Acknowledgements
... M. Dyck and W. Soon initiated this scientific study around
2002–2003 without seeking research fundings and both have contributed
equally. W. Soon's effort for the completion of this paper was
partially supported by grants from the Charles G. Koch Charitable
Foundation, American Petroleum Institute, and Exxon-Mobil Corporation.
The views expressed herein are solely of the authors and are
    independent of sources providing support."

Secondly, "ad hominem" are normally not a great argument, but perfectly appropriate when the only argument that the deniers have is "we are so great and smart, and so many, so you'd better believe us". That is called argument from authority, or more correctly argument from B.S.

  34. A couple of years late here, sorry. But I keep noticing that the so-called scientists who keep signing these things never include the scientists who understand life and ecology, and what's going to happen to ecosystems and life. They're all rock people, or space people, or air people, or money people. No life scientists (except for that retired soil scientist?).
