Over 16,000 police are in Rostok and maybe five times as many protesters, the vast majority of whom are peaceful. However, there were at least 2000 violent anarchists in the crowd. The effect that this will have on the summit is to be seen. To the extent that this weakens Chancellor Merkel's position and diffuses reporting on the summit itself, the consequences could be grave
