I'd guess at tens of thousands of acres, much of it low value though.

That's a somewhat artificial number - one can come up with assumptions that make things much worse. OTOH, it also assumes the non-engineered, salt pond levees along San Francisco Bay don't work at all, when they have actually prevented tidal flooding for 60-80 years.

There isn't that much reliance AFAIK I know on active pumping outside a few areas below sea level due to subsidence from the pre-1970 era.

We do have some pretty cool passive pumping systems: floodwater is gravity-diverted to detention basins during flood stages, the detention basins have spring loaded outfalls that will be kept closed by floodwater pressure in stream channels and then open up automatically when flood levels fall, no power needed.Brianhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/09301230860904555513noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-16612221.post-14131028619007049342015-01-09T20:20:10.004-05:002015-01-09T20:20:10.004-05:00So, interested in questions relevant to the distri...So, interested in questions relevant to the district, anyhow? I've wondered how much of it is below flood level, using the worst case with an onshore wind and high tide and sustained upstream rainfall.
Oh, plus an earthquake to take out the grid and presumably the pumps for a while, guessing that some pumping is anticipated.
