Pics and video from last week

First anti-CO2 graffiti I've seen. Apparently they're anti Peets Coffee as well. I don't know, I think Peets is fine.

I attended a student rally on Monday at Stanford to promote climate divestment, about 40-50 students there. Not too bad. Their Facebook page is here.

Video from the rally.

  2. Matthew - maybe. They serve Peets at the restaurant where it was, though.

Joe - I would take on Germany and Japan's problems in return for their per capita emissions. Still, climate divestment is coming to Europe. Haven't heard about anything in Japan. I'm not sure how strong the socially responsible investment movement is in Japan, but it may just be my lack of knowledge.

  3. Germany has pulled off a pretty amazing feat - soaring energy prices AND increasing CO2 emissions at the same time!

Meanwhile, US emissions per capita and now absolute emissions are falling while energy prices are falling.

US has the benefit of the Nat Gas, of course.

And of course the mild warming is probably a net benefit making efforts to limit co2 needless.

But the evidence is, to emit less CO2, use natural gas.

  4. The most effective divestment starts with your own choices. Give up the car, stop flying in airplanes, stop using treated water, quit heating and lighting your house, quit eating food, don't walk or ride a bike on asphalt and concrete.

As long as there is a market for products that generate CO2, these silly little divestment actions makes serious reform more difficult because you make it look like a hippy cult.

  5. Howard - in case you're actually serious, reducing fossil fuel demand is definitely the key, and divestment helps increase the motivation to do it.

In case you're not serious, then it's the trap again - 'live in a cave before you talk about climate, and also no one should listen to weirdos who live in caves'.

  6. Brian,

Did you walk, take public transportation, or did you drive to Stanford?

  7. Anon1 - very boring. I have already stated that I'm a hypocrite sometimes and that I should be less of one. There's no other valid point to asking your question. The invalid point is the trap I just pointed out, again.

Anyway, the answer to your question is no.

  8. Brian,

Just proves you are not very committed and make little effort. You, as some in the sports world would say, are all talk and no scoreboard.

Nothing invalid about that point at all.

  9. Maybe Eli carried Brian, like he does on this blog.

Poor AT1, he is too dim to realize that single individuals won't solve the problem now matter what sacrifices they make. What is needed is a new energy infrastructure. What is not needed is imbecilic accusations of hypocrisy levied at any activity that tries to address the real probelm.

    ReplyDelete
  11. According to a_ray all individuals, even if that is millions of individuals, can stop making an effort to curb CO2 emissions.

Good to know, pass it on.

    ReplyDelete
  12. So, AT1, do you acknowledge that AGW is a Tragedy of the Commons?

    ReplyDelete
  13. I for one am just glad to learn that "single individuals won't solve the problem now [sic] matter what sacrifices they make", which means I can quit trying to save energy by taking the train instead of car and turning off the lights when I'm not home and taking short showers.

    Good to know.

Despite claims to the contrary, you can really learn some worthwhile things on these blogs.

Anonytroll, I rather doubt you do any of those things in real life in any case. However, what those actions can do is buy time--something that the likes of you have caused our society to squander in abundance. But, hey go ahead and screw your children and grandchildren. I'm sure they'll let you know how much it means to them.

  15. A_ray you sound as if you are uncomfortable, boxed into a corner, chewing on both feet.

    AT1,
Not at all. I have a life. You are too dim to even realize that you don't and too selfish and thoughtless to care that you are depriving your children of theirs.

Don't worry, AT1, when your children demand to know why you did nothing to help them, I'll attest to the fact that you were simply too incompetent to do so.

    ReplyDelete
  18. A_ray,

You have it backwards. I am actually doing something about CO2 emissions on a personal and business level. It is you and Brian that talk a lot, but when it comes to action you are lacking.

I have a marvelous life, married for almost 25 years, three awesome children and I enjoy contrasting that with such negative ninnies such as yourself.

    I feel pity for you.

  19. As I expected, AT1 reveals itself to be ignorant of the foundation of environmental economics.

    ReplyDelete
  20. Oh please explain Mal. This shall be interesting. I cannot wait for you to show all your knowledge of what I know, what I do and all your evidence to support.

Please prove your assertion or I shall start my own string of false assertions against you (this is called the Rabett Run method of conversing).

    Another talker, what a surprise.

  21. Why do you people bother responding to AT1, in particular to its personal insults, insinuations, and claims of persona superiority of lifestyle?

If you want to annoy the troll, just ignore the troll. It is obviously getting its jollies from getting a rise out of you. You're feeding an entity with the emotional maturity of a 14 year old boy.

  22. So Dhog all I did was ask this question:

    "Brian,

Did you walk, take public transportation, or did you drive to Stanford?"

And I was then met with "...personal insults, insinuations, and claims of persona superiority of lifestyle"

No I am not claiming to have a superior lifestyle. I just have alignment between my actions and my convictions.

Speaking of insults and projecting a sense of superiority we have this:

"You're feeding an entity with the emotional maturity of a 14 year old boy."

I see. Simple question, lines of attack and I am the 14 year old boy, got it.

I have to run. I am attending a protest rally against evil fossil fuel companies. I am renting a Hummer Limousine to take me to the event and I do not want to let the vehicle to sit and idle for more than an hour. (This was approved by a_ray and Brian as appropriate).

Eli if Dhog and friends are example of "smart" people... lol

  24. Thanks a_ray, coming from you means zero nada, zilch. The same can be said for your contributions to the reduction of CO2.

People who fantasize about being a cartoon character can safely be ignored. And now you are starting to think about young children a lot, that is also strange and creepy.

Sounds like a little projection coming from AT1. Ewww! Make that your word of the day, AT1. Have your mommy look it up for you.

  27. It has now degraded to mommy jokes. Pathetic.

AT1, I'm being charitable. I mean if you aren't 4 years old, that implies you are simply stupid and puerile as well as tedious.

  29. a_ray,

I still pity you with all your projections. Mommy jokes, you win the juvenile discourse award, hands down.

AT1--and yet you are here. If you were smart enough to consider the implications, I'd ask what that says about you.

  32. dhogaza: "Why do you people bother responding to AT1...It is obviously getting its jollies from getting a rise out of you."

Uhmm, because we get our jollies from getting a rise out of it? Because every comment it makes is an opportunity to taunt it some more 8^D?

    AT1: "Oh please explain Mal."

So, you can't be expected to make yourself clear, but I should spell things out for you? OK.

You still haven't answered my question: "do you acknowledge that AGW is a Tragedy of the Commons?" The evidence so far suggests that you don't know what a TotC is, or how it applies to AGW.

If you don't know what the TotC is, then you're ignorant.

If you do know what the TotC is and don't think it applies to AGW, then either you're too stupid to make the connection or you're in denial.

If you do know what the TotC is, and you agree that it applies to AGW, then by boasting about replacing travel with video-teleconferencing, you're admitting you wasted your organization's money by travelling in the first place.

IF you don't answer the question directly, then you're admitting you're just here to make noise, which is what we've all long since concluded anyway.

    Which is it?

    ReplyDelete
  33. I am glad you provided such limited choice. "you must this" Is this the dictator in you? Sorry if I am not impressed with you enough to lift you on a pedestal as all knowing what is best for the world.

..."then by boasting about replacing travel with video-teleconferencing,.."

    Did not boast.

"you're admitting you wasted your organization's money by travelling in the first place."

    Opinions are like a....

There is some elements of TotC with AGW, but to play your game, if you respond to this post you are here only for your own self-interest. I'll simply classify you as a blowhard talker with no scoreboard, just like a_ray and Brian.

  34. AT1: "if you respond to this post you are here only for your own self-interest."

I usually come here for Eli's insights, and value added by John Mashey inter alia. But you're right about my self-interest: I only engage you because it's fun to expose your emotional immaturity and lack of intellectual depth. I'll eventually get bored with you like a cat does with its toys, perhaps with brief bouts of renewed playfulness. Some bunnies may prefer that you be ignored in the hopes you'll go away, but as long as Eli indulges your obnoxious presence, we might as well take an occasional whack at you for laughs.

  35. Mal most if not all of what you write is BS and inaccurate.

Your games are predictable and boring and your claims of superiority are a joke. I sense deep conflict in you, probably a sense of under achievement in your life which contrasts sharply against your elevated opinion of your abilities.

You will pass on bitter and conflicted, if not alone.

I pity you almost as much as a_ray.
