Puff, the magic sky dragon lived by O2C
And frolicked in the blog of Judith A. Curry,
Little Judy blogger loved that rascal Puff,
And published his posts and comments and other fanciful stuff. oh
A dragon lives forever but not so in the blogs
Fanciful nonsense and silly tales make way for other toys.
One grey night it happened, Judy wiped out the threads
And Puff that mighty dragon, he ceased his fearless roar.
His head was bent in sorrow, green scales fell like rain,
Puff no longer went to play along the cherry picking lane.
Without his life-long friend, puff could not be brave,
So puff that mighty dragon sadly slipped into his cave. oh!
Eli had such a good time with Puff, and you know what, apparently, we say apparently, there are limits for everyone, so apparently Judy has wiped out the sky dragon threads.

Here is another attempt at trying to untangle the Skydragons’ misunderstanding about the greenhouse effect and the planetary energy balance.....
The Skydragons is a new low in global warming denialism. They think there is no greenhouse effect (!!) even though the Earth is about 33 C (59F) warmer than it would be in the absence of a greenhouse effect.
ReplyDeleteBack in the 1820's, Joseph Fourier realized that the Earth was warmer than you would expect, although he couldn't calculate how much warmer. Recall that the mechanical equivalent of heat wasn't discovered until ca. 1840, so...
(1) the greenhouse effect has been known for nearly two centuries
(2) the greenhouse effect is a BIG effect
(3) human activities has enhanced CO2 levels and hence enhanced the greenhouse effect, but the greenhouse effect has been happening for billions of years.
Now these geniuses proclaim that it isn't happening (!!)
"or maybe she just put them up in the attic and you know whats up there."

marginalized, LOL
Thanks for the links, bluegrue. The first link itself links to the web page for Slaying The Sky Dragon and on that page we find an entertaining little 2min video clip introduced as:
ReplyDelete"Axe the Tax from the Galileo Movement featuring Alan Jones
The carbon dioxide tax has divided Australia. This video meets people's needs for truth, understanding, reassurance, security, confidence, hope and clarity."
Alan Jones is a radio host in Australia, with views somewhat to the right of that paragon of scientific accuracy, USA Senator Inhofe. The video delivers on some of its promises, by providing understanding, reassurance, security, confidence and hope to deniers everywhere (all through motherhood statements and arm waving), but sadly falls down on truth and clarity (CO2 is not a pollutant and there is only a teeny weeny bit of it in the atmosphere, so why should we worry?). The very fact that the Sky Dragon web page promotes Alan Jones destroys any credibility it might have had. So what else is new?

I must take partial credit for Prof. Curry's reluctant decision to become an e-book burner and destroy all the work of John O'Sullivan's critics.
ReplyDeleteI just filed an affidavit with 167 pages of exhibits that document O'Sullivan's bogus academic and professional credentials and other misdeeds, with the Supreme Court of British Columbia, in the matter of Michael Mann vs. Tim Ball, et al. In response, Mr. O'Sullivan has gone postal.
I was asked to submit the affidavit for a May 2 hearing of Ball's Notice of Application. Ball and his (real) attorney Michael Scherr filed this application to prevent the libelous statements O'Sullivan published on behalf of Tim Ball from being considered in the libel trial.
Astonishingly, they are claiming O'Sullivan's libelous statements are protected by "lawyer-client privilege."
No, that's not a joke. They're trying to keep out the libelous statements O'Sullivan publicly published based on the nonsensical claim that O'Sullivan -- who is not licensed to practice law in Canada or anywhere else -- is Tim Ball's lawyer.
Although my affidavit is now a public record, I'm waiting for the judge's ruling on this Notice of Application before deciding whether to publish it.
My affidavit is a summary of nearly a year of investigating Mr. O'Sullivan's actual past -- including how his substitute teaching career ended suddenly in 2003 after he was arrested and tried for sending obscene messages to a 16-y-o girl and assaulting her. He was acquitted for lack of evidence, after which he launched his career as a writer of lurid "fact-based" novels, by self-publishing Vanilla Girl," which he calls "A fact-based crime story of a teacher's struggle to control his erotic obsession with a schoolgirl." In it he attacks laws against pedophilia as arbitrary and foolish.
You can see why he's going postal.
You might like to see the email O'Sullivan sent Prof. Curry that scared her into censoring thousands of posts on John O'Sullivan and his Sky Dragon Slayers.
ReplyDeleteNeedless to say, barely a word is true -- especially about the reason I was terminated by the American Medical Association in 1998 (Wil Hylton published an excellent account of the affair (for which I won Amnesty International USA's "Spotlight on Media Award" and other honors) was published in Harpers magazine in 2003: http://www.wrongfuldeathinstitute.com/links/sickontheinside.htm
Before coming under attack last may by this humbug, I NEVER wrote anything about global warming, the environment, or conservation. His calling me "a former pro-green journalist" is a blatant lie. Nor is it true that it's a felony to falsely pass yourself off as a lawyer in the U.S. In some states -- like here in NY where O'Sullivan is "litigating" -- it's only a little more serious than J-walking.

False statements are deemed actionable if they can " . . reasonably be understood as declaring or implying actual facts capable of being proved true or false." [Ruiz v. Harbor View Community Assâ (2005) 134 Cal.App.4th 1456, 1471]. To date you have published no substantiating evidence to verify your scurrilous claims and nor do you appear to have requested any such evidence from your accomplices, Mr. Skolnick and Mr. Ridley.
Mr. Skolnick and Mr. Ridley (with you) are shown to have published numerous false statements - among them that I have fraudulently misrepresented myself as an attorney. Be advised that no one who is unqualified may claim to be an attorney and to do so is a felony under both U.S. and U.K. law. Someone of your academic standing should know this basic fact. As such you are required to show due diligence. Under law, being that you knowingly make such false and malicious statements - or are actively and willingly a co-publisher of others' malicious speech - you are absolutely NOT protected under the First Amendment. As such you are hereby on notice that I require you to either:

(b) demand from Mr. Skolnick and Mr. Ridley verifiable evidence substantiating such ludicrous claims (i.e. by way of a copy of a police report of an ongoing criminal investigation about me or, in the alternative, proof of my conviction(s) for any such offense(s)).
In addition, I demand a written apology from you for publishing these defamatory comments. If I do not have your full compliance within 48 hours then your omission to act may be deemed to be further and additional evidence of actual malice. As such, be advised that I will give no further warning being that I intend to take action to have your blog ‘Climate Etc. shut down by your Internet service provider (ISP) as per violation of your TOS and/or render you liable to civil proceedings for complicity (being that your ISP is also exposed by you to liability for defamatory statements placed by third parties).

Well, a bit more seriously, EINAL, but if Ball thought O'Sullivan was one and revealed stuff to him that might be interesting. Another scenario that causes the ears to tremble with delight is that if O'Sullivan revealed stuff that Ball told him in confidence. . . oh it gets too silly too fast.

In the third (I think) of bluegrues's links to Curry's not-so-eradicated blog series on the "sky dragon," she mentions the book is selling fairly well.
ReplyDeleteShe made the comment, about 400 days ago. (See below.)
Today Amazon has it ranked at 879,354 among "best" sellers.
While Amazon apparently lists over 7 million books, the current "sky dragon" ranking corresponds to sales of about "three books every 500 days."

PS
ReplyDeleteThe "sky dragon" DVD (!?!) has the same rank as the book.
Perhaps combined sales are 3 per 500 days?
(Sorry, but I'll not be taking the time to answer my own question. Basta for "sky dragons.")
John Puma
John, so they only sold 3 in 500 days. Someone better contact Heartland so they can buy up thousands and distribute them to every high school physics class.
ReplyDeleteIf even the regular deniers diss this book it really tells you how bad it really is.
I thought these threads were proofs that Judy was being critical of skeptiks.
ReplyDeleteHow to widen the Overton Window after the Dragons have been winnowed?
(A Skolnick: good for you, but CSI folks often do good things, so no surprise).
ReplyDeleteBut this is fascinating. Dr Curry rapidly took down the posts under threat of lawsuit over defamation.
I almost never read Climate, Etc (except when studying encouragement of D-K hordes in this.
Are there other threads anyone might consider defamatory over there?
(Some have wondered if the WebCites were due to me. I have WebCited many interesting files, but didn't even know about these.)
The investigative journalists from Hollywood are incurably, and stereotypically, cynical, but it seems our friend Andrew Skolnick wasn't nearly cynical enough and suffered a serious learning opportunity.
ReplyDelete"Peter, I took time to reply to your email because I took you for a person of ethics. I’m afraid I may have jumped to conclusions."
"Peter" is Pete Ridley, AKA "his [Skolnick's] accomplice".
Popcorn.
Last November, I had the misfortune to see two of the Sky Dragons, John O’Sullivan and Hans Schreuder, in action. The occasion was a presentation given by a group opposing the building of two wind turbines by a local community energy group here in South Devon.
ReplyDeleteThe leader of the organizing group (with whom I’ve exchanged a war of words via the letters page of our local newspaper) doesn’t think we need renewable energy because he thinks climate change isn’t happening. His views were partially informed by the “Slaying the Sky Dragon” book, which he mentioned in one letter, so he invited O’Sullivan and Schreuder down to tell us all how tens of thousands of scientists have got it all hopelessly wrong the last 150 years or so since Fourier.
O’Sullivan started his talk by saying that it was all a plot by the UN to impose a world government and it was all downhill from there on. As for Schreuder, I haven’t got the faintest idea what he was on about. I’m sure at one point he said that the atmosphere cooled the planet, but he kept going off at tangents and the whole evening turned into a complete shambles.
In the question and answer session that followed the presentations, it became apparent that out of the audience of around 40 people, there were only about 5 of us who were interested in climate change – the rest had come along to find out about wind turbines. On the way home, the two people I’d gone along with and I agreed that it had all been a spectacular own goal by the organizers.
As for the Sky Dragons, you can see how bad they are by the fact that even Christopher Monckton disowns them.
Frankly, I'm just kind of amazed there's any contrarian argument Aunt Judy wouldn't "entertain" in her little salon.
ReplyDeleteJudy is a step above Lindzen in that she is not totally dishonest. She's a step below Woy, in that Woy seems to have an understanding of how the greenhouse mechanism works.
And Stevie McI, well at least he makes Lindzen feel better.
The dragons' sense of timing is atrocious. If they had come by 5 or so years ago, say when WUWT had just started, they could have made quite an impact. But the deniers also learn. Some of them have become 'lukewarmers' to shift that Overton window (see the professor's last blog post). The others have become more sophisticated, sophisticated enough to realize that the sky dragons will damage the PR delay effort to make sure the glorious free markets will solve AGW before the water melons screw everything up.
ReplyDeleteI feel sorry for the dragons, left in the cold by the brethren because they are a liability. Where have the times gone when we could just spout any old nonsense? It's all gone downhill from the moment Patrick Michaels started giving tips on that Heartland Denial Conference.
Great guy, this John O'Sullivan. I see O'Sullivan's accusing Skolnick of gleefully aligning...with pedophiles." (Michael Mann's at Penn State.. ergo... duh). The irony is how Missouri court records show that O'Sullivan's never heard the old saying, "one finger pointed at someone else leaves three pointed back at yourself".
ReplyDelete"Great guy, this John O'Sullivan."
ReplyDeleteRetracted. Wrong John O'Sullivan. Easy to see why one could get confused.
Seems like time to reach out to the honest skeptics, get them to round up contributions to the climate scientists legal defense fund, and provide some help to Dr. Curry.
ReplyDeleteYou don't have to like what someone says to defend their right to speak. It's the ones you don't like that test your commitment to freedom of speech.
Seriously.
There _are_ things we can agree on.
Bunnies may be interested to know that several people have had their share of unfortunate interactions with Pete Ridley, in particular over at Greenfyre's.
ReplyDeleteHe was a bit of a stalker (Tamsin, better pay attantion to this particular comment), so I almost feel sympathy for O'Sullivan. Almost. Call me human.
Marco
Well color me stoopid, that why they call me stoopid.
ReplyDeleteThree sales and eighteen reviews, a nice fail of the smell test, one could say.

Hank has a good point.
ReplyDeleteI had some interaction with John O'Sullivan back in 2007 on the yahoo global warming message boards. He goes by the Moniker John O there.
ReplyDeleteHis would trawl up the usual discredited arguments mixed in with strong high tempo rhetoric and wild insults. Kind of like an angry and manic version of Lord Monckton, but more stupid.
I sadly have to admit he is one of the main reasons I stopped contributing to the board. Most of the other people I interacted with were more like skeptically minded lay-people with a passing interest in climate.
As far as I remember, John O claimed he was a lawyer living in Great Yarmouth on his yahoo profile, so at least he is consistent in his delusions.
I'm sure it is the same John O because his yahoo photo.
is of the gentleman going by John O'Sullivan on gravatar claiming to have co-written gravatar.
Paul H
I should add, based on my interactions, that it isn't a great surprise that he has been potentially been exposed as a fabricator of credentials. Neither is it a huge surprise that he went onto co-author a book that was a pile of dog poo. He always was motivated, running at a high tempo, and full of it.
ReplyDeletePaul H
I see O'Sullivan also goes by the name J Daly O'Neal.
ReplyDelete> Hank has a good point.
ReplyDeleteHank always has.
Unless Hank has a good link.
In which case I'd be tempted to say:
Hank has a good link.
But there's always in a good point in Hank's links.
So I guess it depends on how we feel about the transitivity of "having a good point".
John O'Sullivan used the pen name J Daley O'Neal when he self-published his first "factual" novel Vanilla Girl online.
ReplyDeleteHe began his dramatically unsuccessful career as a novelist after he could no longer get a job as a school teacher following his arrest and trial in 2003 for assaulting and repeatedly sending obscene messages to a 16-y-o girl.
He was acquitted for lack of evidence, after which he self-published what he calls “a fact-based crime story of a teacher’s struggle to control his erotic obsession with a schoolgirl.” In it he discusses ad nauseum his sexual fantasies involving young girls and defended his belief why society is wrong to punish what he called "kiddie fiddlers."
To top it off, he published on his J Daley O'Neil blog soft-porn artwork of himself, standing naked, gazing at a bare-breasted pubescent temptress. I kid you not:
http://www.myspace.com/jdaleyoneal/photos/935141
In addition to considering himself without cause a highly successful lawyer and the most popular science writer in the world covering global warming, he fancies himself God's gift to women and a fine artist.
At least he did earn a degree in art from the West Surrey College of Art and Design -- the same time that he now says he was earning a law degree from a different school.
I see Manuel's name's been redacted from the Sky Dragon book. Still just about visible in the WUWT review image, though (sixth down). Just imagine the uproar if MBH'98 had quietly become BH'98.
ReplyDeleteJB: Or if a third of them had been prosecuted for child sexual abuse.
ReplyDeleteAskolnick and others, while JO'S and Manuel may not exactly be Nature's noblemen, Eli is getting a bit uncomfortable about the turn the discussion is taking. Comments about their science and their politics are fair game here. Having established their presence on various police blotters, perhaps that part of the discussion would better fit elsewhere.
ReplyDeleteOkay Eli. Keep an eye out for a Royal Society report tomorrow, BTW. Looks like it might be interesting.

PART 1
ReplyDeleteProfessor Curry also took down her “Letter to the dragon slayers” thread which revealed much about “slayer” John O’Sullivan. I have a copy of the 1400+ comments just before it was taken down on 21st April and would like it posted on webcitation alongside the three threads. It contains information that anyone considering joining the ”Slayers” and the rest of the PSI group should be aware of. Can anyone here advise how I can do that.
In Dec. 2010/Jan. 2011 there were hundreds of E-mails between the “Slayers” and others in which I persistently challenged John’s ludicrous claim that he intended PSI to take legal action against government agencies such as NOAA. He outlined his plan in Chapter 21 of “Slaying the sky dragon”, describing it in those E-mails as “the only game in town”. his team “ready and waiting to take the battle on”. It only needed $3000 dollars to get the ball rolling. His 26th Dec. 2010 appeal for donations from within his “Slayer”/PSI group failed to raise that trivial amount (little Xmas spirit of giving to the needy).
PSI co-founder Hans (Johannes Cornelis?) Schreuder expressed his objection to my repeatedly pointing out the stupidity of what John, he and Joe Olson were proposing. He declared on 6th Jan. “ .. You are digging a trap into which we will all fall if you guys insist in keeping this pest in the fold. He is, IMHO, a spy who has so far very successfully infiltrated the hub of our undertakings. His constant questioning, bordering on demanding to know, of what we are all doing is self-evident yet again below. Look at the mailing list he is brazenly using to demand to know what our "other pressing business" is - what the **** has that got to do with him?! He has nothing to offer that we do not already possess.
If you insist on keeping this clown in the loop, than I am out of it, simple as that. My sixth sense has yet to be proven wrong and I do not like this pest one bit .. ”.
My 6th sense tells me that if Hans is in fact Johannes Cornelis then there appears to be a very sound reason why he would be so eager to support John’s venture and objected so strongly to my attempts to get the others to reject the proposal. John’s 20-year career as a school teacher had come to an abrupt end in 2003 and Johannes Cornelis was involved in two business ventures but neither could be regarded as an outstanding success (http://company-director-check.co.uk/director/910813452 and http://www.companiesintheuk.co.uk/Company/AllDocuments/britishdotcom).
y
PART 2
ReplyDeleteJohn was proposing was to set up PSI with himself as CEO, Hans as CFO and Tim Ball as Chairman but they needed money to do so. They couldn’t raise the £15000 from among their “ .. group of 36 respected international scientists and related professionals .. ” (less than sly £417 each) so held out the begging bowl (http://www.gofundme.com/1v39s&aff=GFMse). You can guess where the first £350 came from.
I responded to Hans’s insults with further objections about their proposals to the group. A more reasoned reaction to my arguments was provided by their star co-author of “Slaying the sky dragon” Professor Claes Johnson. He E-mailed the “Slayers” group on 12 January, 2011 “ .. I think the questions raised by Pete are relevant: How many copies of the book have been sold? Who has noticed and commented? At least in Sweden, the book does not seem to exist, as if it has been eaten by the Dragon instead of killing him .. ”.
On 14th Jan. I again E-mailed the group “ .. I believe that trying to set up PSI as a CIC would fail and here’s why .. ”. Again Professor Johnson supported me “ .. As before I essentially agree with Pete .. ”. On 15th Oct. on Professor Curry’s “Letter to the dragon slayers” thread Professor Johnson said “ .. I am not a member of any group subject to group thinking, in particular not the slayers group .. ”. From exchanges that I have had several others have also chosen to dissociate themselves from PSI.
Anyone interested in having a copy of my 71-page Word document of “PSI & Due Diligence” E-mails and my 197-page document which includes E-mails on the subject of “John O'Sullivan's specious claims” (which was the E-mail thread in which Professor Grant Petty’s “Letter to the dragon slayers” appeared need only ask. Then of course there are the revelations in Andrew Skolnick’s 167-page affidavit – that should make for interesting reading.
The opinions that I expressed in the comments that I posted about John O’Sullivan/the “Slayers”/PSI on Professor Curry’s various threads and elsewhere in the blogosphere are based mainly up my interpretation of the evidence in those two documents. As I have repeatedly said in my comments, if I have misinterpreted or misrepresented any of the facts then it was not deliberate and if anyone feels that I have done so then they should let me know how. I will then reconsider my comments and whether or not an apology is warranted. No-one has yet done so.
I invited John O’Sullivan to either substantiate what I see as his defamatory allegations made against me in his “Pre-litigation notice” to Professor Curry or apologise. He has refused to do either. Perhaps it is time that he put up or shut up, as he suggested to us during our recent exchanges about his defamatory statements in his “Pre-litigation notice”. In my humble opinion John has once again lost the plot.
As I have been given a mention on this thread I hope that Eli will see fit to allow me this “right-to-reply”.
BTW, Marco, cowards hurl insults from behind false names.

More details about "Slayer", Principia Scientific International CEO & "Legal Consultant" John O'Sullivan's unsubstantiated allegations of defamation are being posted at "Professor Judith Curry threatened with blog closure attempt" (http://globalpoliticalshenanigans.blogspot.co.uk/2012/05/professor-judith-curry-threatened-with.html).
ReplyDeleteA related thread "A short history of Principia Scientific International" being drafted for posting next week.

ReplyDeletethis Osulllivan is still bosting have a look !
I see that all but one of those "dragon slayer" threads that were removed from Professor Curry's Climate etc. blog on 21st April 2012 have now been restored.
ReplyDeleteThe "dragon slayers" were set up in 2010 by out-of-work high-school art teacher John O'Sullivan, the objective appearing to be to get others to fund setting himself up as CEO of his own publishing company, Principia Scientific International.
John O'Sullivan's immediate triumphant reaction on 22nd April 2012 to an enquiry about Professor Curry's removal of her article "Letter to the dragon slayers" was to boast QUOTE: ..
Curry has capitulated and removed her unlawful and scurrilous comments plus a ton of other science-free garbage attacking my colleagues - it's a humiliating climb down. A victory not just for me, but all the Slayers . If Curry manages to refrain from publishing any further libelous content then she won't have to be chastised again by my "hysterical hyperbole." .. UNQUOTE (see Section 3.0 of http://globalpoliticalshenanigans.blogspot.co.uk/2012/05/professor-judith-curry-threatened-with.html).
It will be interesting to see what, if any, reaction he has to her decision to restore those articles to the public domain, especially "Letter to the dragon slayers" and all of the 1410 ensuing comments (http://judithcurry.com/2011/10/15/letter-to-the-dragon-slayers/), including those that John O'Sullivan claimed were " ...unlawful and scurrilous .. ".
