In some hospitals the back up generators failed. I don't know if the resulting deaths counted as heat related deaths or not (or even if such stats are kept here in Australia).

Also the railways couldn't keep up - lots of train cancellations. And most air conditioners aren't rated above 41C - so 47C is too much for them. (My car air con stopped working above 39C - I nearly collapsed driving when it was 47C.)

I for one do not think that excessive heat is preferable to excessive cold, but I expect it depends on your starting temperature.

I am aware that the horrific heat waves we've had so far are probably minor compared to what's ahead.Souhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/08818999735123752034noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-16612221.post-5202029539548764362010-04-19T01:56:57.081-04:002010-04-19T01:56:57.081-04:00On the matter of that DoI request:

It will still be plenty cold enough to freeze to death. You will just have to limit your freezing-to-death activity to late December to early February rather than stretching it into late November and February. Likewise, most heat deaths will occur in the full-on Summer.

It's a wonder one can find any straw on the market at all what with all the construction of straw men.
